Belarus leader says Russian nuclear weapons shipments are completed, raising concern in the region

TALLINN, Estonia – The president of Belarus said on Monday that Russia had completed the delivery of its tactical nuclear weapons to his country, an initiative that raised strong concerns in neighboring Poland and elsewhere in the region.

President Alexander Lukashenko said at a meeting of the Moscow-led economic bloc in St. Petersburg that the shipment was completed in October, but he did not provide details on how many weapons were delivered or where they had been used.

Tactical nuclear weapons, intended for use on the battlefield, have a short range and low yield compared to more powerful nuclear warheads mounted on long-range missiles.

Russia said it would maintain control over those sent to Belarus.

Lukashenko has said that hosting Russian nuclear weapons in his country is aimed at preventing aggression by Poland, a NATO member.

Poland offers military, humanitarian and political support to neighboring Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression and participates in international sanctions on Russia and Belarus.

Russian troops based in Belarus invaded Ukraine from the north on the opening day of the war, but Belarusian troops are not known to have taken part.
