Beloved ‘Sesame Street’ Cast Member Bob McGrath Dies At 90

“Sesame Street” star Bob McGrath has died at the age of 90.

McGrath has been a cast member of the beloved children’s television series since its debut in 1969.

His death was announced through a statement from his family, released on his Facebook page.

“Hello Facebook friends, the McGrath family has some sad news to share,” the brief statement began, “Our father, Bob McGrath, passed away today. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family,” the statement said.

McGrath is best known for playing “Sesame Street’s” resident Bob Johnson.

In a Twitter thread published shortly after the announcement of McGrath’s death, the official Sesame Workshop paid tribute to the longtime “Sesame Street” star.

“A founding cast member, Bob embodied the melody of ‘Sesame Street’ like no other, and his performances brought joy and wonder to generations of children around the world,” Sesame Workshop tweeted, “Whether teaching them the ABCs, the people in their neighborhood , or the simple joy of feeling the music in their hearts. A respected performer around the world, Bob’s rich tenor filled the airwaves and concert halls from Las Vegas to Saskatchewan to Toyko countless times. We will forever be grateful for his creative contributions for many years for ‘Sesame Street’ and is honored to have him share so much of his life with us,” concluded the Sesame Workshop series.

McGrath’s legacy has undoubtedly impacted many fans around the world, including his fellow performers.

Actress Holly Robinson Peete took to Twitter to share a vintage clip of her younger self feeding a goat with McGrath!

“I first met Bob McGrath in 1969 when he & my Dad Matt starred in ‘Sesame Street.’ He is the kindest, sweetest, kindest man. My brother and I got to be in this scene with him. Rest in peace, Bob McGrath. You are loved all over the world. Say hello to my pops,” the “21 Jump Street” star tweeted.

David Gordon of TheatherMedia tweeted about the memorable meeting with McGrath.

“Met Bob McGrath at a show we both saw once. I was like, ‘omigod you Bob!’ and he was like ‘I’m sure!’ and then I asked him to sign something for me and he did. He’s exactly what anyone who grew up watching ‘Sesame Street’ would look like,” Gordon said tweeted.

Questlove paid tribute to McGrath on his social media accounts as well.

From 1974 to 2012, Bob rode the Sesame Street float with the cast and Muppets.

Radio host Eric Alper included facts about McGrath’s legacy on “Sesame Street” in his tribute. Alper tweeted“He was 1 of 4 non-Muppet actors we met every day when the show started in 1969, and he will be missed.”

McGrath ended her run on the series five years ago, according to CNN, but her departure from the series did not mark the end of McGrath’s relationship with the series; the outlet also reported McGrath continued to represent the show through public appearances after his departure.
