The November 2022 deaths of four University of Idaho students shocked the nation as their off-campus residence quickly turned into a bloody crime scene. One of the survivors’ roommates, Bethany Funke, is now in the news after Bryan Kohberger’s defense team said she can clear her name.
One of the two housemates who survived the night was Bethany. Before their deaths, he shared a home with students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, and Xana Kernodle. The defense team for Kohberger argued in April 2023 that Bethany might clear her record because she has “material information for charges against Mr. Kohberger,” which could be an “exoneration” for her, according to E! News.
“Ms. Funke’s information is unique to her experience and cannot be provided by other witnesses,” said the investigator, adding that “it is necessary to call this witness because the witness’ testimony is material and necessary for this case,” according to the outlet. However, the lawyer Bethany contested the charges made by the investigators, arguing that there was no justification for the defense to request a subpoena for the preliminary court hearing, set for June 28, 2023.
“This statement is conclusive,” the surviving victim’s attorney wrote in a motion opposing the subpoena. “There is no further information regarding the details of the content of the testimony, its materiality, or the exculpatory information that Ms. Funke claims or why it will be discussed at the preliminary hearing.”
The motion also asserts that there is no authority to subpoena Nevada witnesses for hearings based in Idaho. “The preliminary hearing is not intended to be a mistrial because its purpose is limited to determining probable cause,” Bethany’s attorney added in the motion.
Bethany lives on the first floor with fellow survivor Dylan Mortenson, the person who allegedly came face-to-face with the killer on the night of the attack. After the murder, Mortensen and surviving housemate Bethany Funke got matching tattoos in honor of the victims.

Detlef was born in Germany to the late Johannes and Clara Funke. He is the third child of four siblings. Detlef spent three years in trade school/apprenticeship in cosmetology. She continued for another year to earn a master’s in cosmetology.
Detlef then did a tour of duty in the German army. He came to the United States in 1964 where he lived in Elko, Nevada. He met his wife Ina and they married in 1966. They moved to Carson City, Nevada in 1975.
Detlef has a passion for fishing, hunting and gardening. He is very proud to live in America and acquired US Citizenship. Detlef is survived by his three sons: Mark (Chantalle), Kai (Wendy), and Kim. One of them was Bethany’s father and mother.
