The Biden administration announced on Saturday that the United States is committed to phasing out coal-fired power plants across the country and not building new ones as it moves forward with its green agenda.
US Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry announced at the annual United Nations climate change summit in Dubai, called COP28, that America joins 56 other countries that have compromised with the Power Past Coal Alliance.
“We will work to accelerate the relentless phase-out of coal around the world, building stronger economies and more resilient communities,” Kerry said in a statement.
“The first step is to stop making the problem worse: stop building coal-fired power plants that haven’t stopped.”
It’s not clear when existing US coal plants will need to be shut down, but Biden’s other regulatory actions and international commitments already in place have targeted 2035 as a coal-free deadline.
