President Biden celebrated his birthday Monday with a photo of a cake lit with 81 candles — sparking a new joke about his advanced age.
The image depicts the beaming commander-in-chief sitting at the White House dining table, his face bathed in orange light from the 81 candles adorning the top of his flaming celebratory dessert.
The oldest president in US history is trying to get ahead of the narrative of yesteryear by broadcasting a series of self-deprecating jokes.
“Turns out on your 146th birthday, you ran out of room for candles!” Biden joked on his POTUS Instagram account.
The president also used the image for his first post on Threads, joking, “I’m 81 years old and all I got was a new social platform.”
“And to the workers at the birthday candle factory, I hope your union gives you more time,” he joked.
Still, the image sparked more jokes when it spread online.

“Joe Biden’s cake had so many candles on it that it almost set the White House on fire,” quipped one user on X.
“Can’t get over the photo of Biden’s birthday cake,” wrote another, sharing a gif from “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” showing Will Smith’s character burning a frying pan.
“Joe Biden got an Olympic torch birthday cake,” a third joked, while another said “Biden is so old his birthday cake looks like a bonfire.”
But not all reactions to Biden’s fiery celebration have been light-hearted.
One user quipped that Biden’s birthday cake looked like a “campfire”. Another wit joked that the fire-burnt cake was an “assassination attempt.”
“There’s a portal to hell on a plate in front of him,” former National Rifle Association spokesman turned radio host Dana Loesch wrote on X.
“The cake reminds me [the] the state of the US economy,” said another critic.
A third seemed to chide White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre for failing to manage her boss’s image, writing: “Karine, she looks mean in this picture. Bad view.”

The president spent part of his special day pardoning a pair of turkeys named “Liberty” and “Bell” at the White House – a tradition dating back 76 years.
Biden joked that he didn’t show up for the first turkey pardon ceremony because he was too young. He also quipped that he is only 60 years old.
“I just want you to know that it’s hard to reach the age of 60. It’s hard,” he told the assembled audience.

But Biden’s age is no laughing matter, with a growing number of critics across the political spectrum questioning his eligibility for office following his various public misdeeds and foibles — the latest on Monday, when he made a joke by mixing Taylor Swift and Britney Spears.
A New York Times poll released this month found 71% of swing state voters believe Biden is “too old to be an effective president,” while only 39% said the same of his likely GOP challenger, Donald Trump, 77.
According to a Wall Street Journal poll conducted in September, 73% of registered voters believe Biden is too old, compared to 47% who say the same about Trump.
If Biden wins the election next year and serves the full four years until January 2029, he will leave the White House at the age of 86.
