Biden predicts now may be the ‘last gasp’ of ‘MAGA Republicans’

President Biden thinks that the so-called Republican MAGA movement may actually be anemic, but still dangerous.

“I think this is the last gasp or maybe the first big gasp of the MAGA Republican Party. And I think Trump has come to the conclusion that he should win,” Biden told ProPublica in an interview released Sunday.

Interviewer John Harwood asked Biden if the threat to democracy might be smaller than feared because of the lack of violence in the 2022 midterm elections.

“I think the opposite is true, John,” Biden said.”[Trump] will pull out all the stops. I mean, the quote he used was just — I never thought I’d hear a president say some of the things he said.”

Last Thursday, Biden delivered a warning speech about the state of US democracy — his fourth speech on the topic, according to the White House.

Biden claimed that “Trump and the MAGA Republicans are determined to destroy American democracy” and sharply rebuked the “extremists in Congress” who want to “burn the place down.”

His speech took place in the purple state of Arizona, where the Biden campaign hopes to consolidate its gains there during the 2020 election.

Trump, who faces a four-count federal indictment over his alleged plan to disrupt the 2020 election, has also accused Democrats of undermining democracy.

He denounced the 91 total criminal charges against him and efforts to use the 14th Amendment to disqualify him from running as “election interference.”

The 14th Amendment stipulates that “No person shall be senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of the president … shall engage in rebellion or insurrection.” Supporters argued that Trump’s actions surrounding the January 6 Capitol riots disqualified him.

“I’m not going to give an opinion on that right now,” Biden said when asked whether Trump should be impeached, noting that “many serious constitutional scholars” disagree on the matter.

The octogenarian president is also unhappy about whether the conservative majority Supreme Court “upholds and will uphold the rule of law.”

“I’m worried because I know that if the other MAGA Republicans win, they don’t want to pull the rule of law, they want to get rid of the FBI,” Biden said.

“I think at the end of the day, this court, which has been one of the most extreme courts — I still think on the fundamental basis of the rule of law that they’re going to uphold that rule.”

Biden also renewed his support for ethics reform for the high court in the wake of recent scandals such as Justice Clarence Thomas’ undisclosed benefits from GOP megadonor Harlan Crow.

Many polls have raised unease among voters, including a majority of Democrats, about Biden’s age. At 80, he is the oldest US president in history and would be 86 by the end of a hypothetical second term.

“I’m not the only Democrat who can protect [democracy]. I happen to be a Democrat who I think is in the best position to ensure that the man [who has us] worried about taking democracy not the president,” Biden said.

Biden went on to warn that “democracy is in danger in other parts of the world too” and that it would be a disaster for the free world if it “fails here.”

Still, he ended on a somewhat confident note about his faith in America’s great writ.

“I truly believe that the vast majority of Americans are good, honorable, honest. I mean, I think it’s a minority of a minority [that’s the problem],” Biden said.
