President Biden on Tuesday slammed the 214 members of the House of Representatives who voted in favor of firing Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, arguing that “history will not look good” on them.
Biden, 81, touted Mayorkas’ “integrity” and his “decorated” career in law enforcement and public service, calling the two articles of impeachment filed against the 64-year-old DHS chief “baseless,” in a statement released by White. House.
“History will not look favorably on State Assembly Members for their blatant unconstitutional partisan actions that have targeted honorable public servants to play petty political games,” the president said.
“From his time at the Department of Justice as US Attorney to his service as Deputy Secretary and now Secretary of Homeland Security, he has faithfully upheld the rule of law and has demonstrated a deep commitment to the values that make our country great,” Biden continued.

The president argued that GOP lawmakers who supported Mayorkas’ impeachment would be better served passing legislation that would give his administration “the tools and resources necessary to address the situation at the border.”
“This impeachment has already failed once in a two-party vote. “Instead of this kind of political stunt, Republicans who have genuine concerns about the border should want Congress to deliver more border resources and stronger border security,” Biden said. “Unfortunately, the same Republicans who pushed for this baseless impeachment rejected the bipartisan plan Secretary Mayorkas and others in my administration have worked hard to strengthen border security at this time — turning away from their own demands for years to pass a border bill which is stronger.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has argued that Republicans in the House have done their part, passing legislation last May addressing border security that the Democratic-controlled Senate did not take up.
He and other top Republicans on Capitol Hill rejected a bipartisan Senate bill linking border security to aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan last week out of concern that it did not go far enough to address the border crisis.

In his own statement, Johnson accused Mayorkas of “deliberately and consistently” refusing to comply with US immigration laws and making “multiple false statements to Congress.”
“For nearly a year, the House Homeland Security Committee has taken a careful and methodical approach to this investigation and the results are clear: since his first day in office, Secretary Mayorkas has deliberately and consistently refused to comply with federal immigration law, fueling the border catastrophe. worst in American history,” Speaker of the House said. “He has undermined public trust through numerous false statements to Congress, obstructed legitimate oversight of the Department of Homeland Security, and violated his oath of office.”

As this secretary refuses to perform the duties the Senate has authorized, the House must act.”
Commenting on Biden, DHS spokeswoman Mia Ehrenberg said in a statement that “Republicans will be remembered by history for trampling on the Constitution for political gain instead of working to solve serious challenges at our border.”
“While Secretary Mayorkas is helping a group of Republican and Democratic Senators develop a bipartisan solution to strengthen border security and get the resources needed for enforcement, House Republicans have wasted months with this baseless and unconstitutional impeachment,” Ehrenberg said, arguing that no there is “a piece of evidence or a valid Constitutional reason” to prosecute Mayorkas.
“Secretary Mayorkas and the Department of Homeland Security will continue to work every day to keep the American people safe.”
