President Biden’s dog commander was recently fired from the White House as reports emerged that the German shepherd had bitten more staff than previously disclosed, creating what staffers say is a dangerous workplace, according to a report.
“We are beyond worrying about trust being broken. We have to speak up,” a source familiar with the president’s Secret Service details told the news station.
There have been 12 documented bite incidents — including 11 with US Secret Service personnel — involving the 2-year-old dog in the past year.
But sources told CNN that the actual number of incidents is higher because other White House employees have accepted the Commander’s intrusion.
None of the sources, who asked to remain anonymous to speak freely about the troubling situation, could provide an exact count of when the dog had sunk its teeth into Executive Mansion employees, but said executive residence staff were among the dog’s first victims.
The Commander last choked an employee last Monday when he bit a uniformed Secret Service officer being treated at the complex.
White House groundskeeper Dale Haney, 71, was also bitten by the dog on Sept. 13, according to a photo published Wednesday by the Daily Mail.
The severity of the bites varies from incident to incident, but at least one of the dog’s victims was sent to hospital with cuts to his arm and thigh.
The Biden family has already had to remove another dog from the White House for biting an agent.
A Secret Service supervisor reportedly warned agents that Commander was understaffed in a large number of incidents over the summer, the source said, describing the job as “hostile” and “dangerous.”
Agents use their radios to alert each other when the allegedly aggressive dog is outside and warn their colleagues to avoid certain areas or entrances where he might be, according to the source.
The dog has since been thrown from the White House grounds, First Lady Jill Biden’s spokeswoman told CNN.
“The commander is not on the White House campus at this time while next steps are evaluated,” Elizabeth Alexander said.
The commander bit several Secret Service agents and a White House groundskeeper.
The Bidens’ old dog, Major, another German shepherd, was previously removed from DC for similar bad behavior.
The Commander was gifted to the First Family on the same day the Major was given to a family friend after biting several members of the Secret Service in 2021.
It is unclear whether the White House keeps a record of the number of bites sustained by the Commander.
“The President and First Lady care deeply about the safety of those who work in the White House and those who protect them every day,” Alexander told CNN. “They remain grateful for the patience and support of the US Secret Service and all involved, as they continue to work through a resolution.”
