TLC My Big Fat Great Life star, Whitney Way Thore’s mother Babs has died after several attacks.
Whitney Way Thore Is Mourning Her Mother
The reality star shocked her fans today when she sent a goodbye message to her mother Barbara Thore letting us know that the beloved TV mom has passed away.
“Rest in peace, sweet Mama. June 22, 1946—December 7, 2022,” began the message. “My mother died last night when her favorite film was being praised. Dad, Hunter, and I held her as she took her last breath. It was 10:32 p.m., the same time he brought me into this world almost forty years ago,” Whitney shared.
He went on to share that his mother’s health had been declining for some time.
“My mother has cerebral amyloid angiopathy, which is an incurable progressive condition caused by proteins in the blood vessels of the brain that can cause dementia, seizures, or as in my mother’s case, brain bleeding (hemorrhagic stroke). When mom had her first stroke in 2017, we were told about this and we knew that more strokes were eventually inevitable. Mother’s second stroke was on December 28, 2021 and the last on November 13, 2022.”
Fans of the show know very little about this because most of the recent seasons have focused on Whit trying to help her mom and dad adjust to life after Barbara’s second stroke. For most of the season, Babs as they affectionately called her was in a rehabilitation facility helping her regain control of her muscles and speech.

“My mother is our family’s greatest gift. We cannot love, respect, or value others more. If you’re reading this, you’re familiar with her magic: her southern charm, her witty sense of humor, her well-timed jokes, her beauty and her ability to make everyone around her feel comfortable and cared for,” she wrote.
“But what you may not understand is the extent of my mother’s love — what you may see and feel through the TV screen is a fraction of a minute that, even if multiplied by a million, will not come close to “real life. .”
Babs often throws fun and shady jabs at Whitney and her husband Glenn Thore. She will also always enjoy dancing and singing with Whitney and her friends. It was hard to believe she was an older woman.
It was even sadder to see him unable to be his true self because the disease had taken him away. The difference can definitely be seen on screen and there’s no one there to keep an overzealous Whitney in line like her mama does.

“I am the luckiest person on the planet to be his for almost 39 years,” the reality star continued. Because she knows how much her mother was loved by so many people, Whitney is grateful to everyone who loves her mother as much as she does.
“We want to thank you for loving our mother. She is happy with her new found television career more than we can describe! It gives him a sense of purpose and excitement and something to look forward to every time the crew comes in.”
Whitney insisted that her mother’s illness was a blessing in disguise.
“We’ve never had more fun or laughed like we did last year. The support from all of you makes her feel so loved and encouraged. We are so grateful that we were able to share him with you and we hope that his memory will continue to be a source of comfort and happiness for the rest of your lives, just like ours.”
He ended his message with a sweet statement: “I love you, Mommy.”
