Woman found burned to death with butcher knife nearby as police search for missing car

Texas police are searching for answers in the death of a woman whose body was found burning on the side of a road in an affluent Austin neighborhood.

The body of Melissa Davis, 33, was found by firefighters who responded to a fire call on the morning of September 29.

Detectives found a lighter in the area, according to local outlet KXAN. A police K-9 was called to the scene and found a butcher knife that had the odor of a lighter, officials said.

Austin police believe “the knife was placed with the victim in an attempt to destroy evidence by fire.”

However, an autopsy showed Davis had no obvious signs of trauma to her body or knife wounds and concluded she had been burned alive.

With little lead, police issued a search notice for Davis’ missing car, a blue 2016 Toyota 4Runner with Texas license plate number KYV3765.

While there are still no suspects in custody, friends and family continue to hope they can find justice for Davis, who disappeared after a trip to a local Apple store to get his phone fixed.

Ellie Simmons, who described Davis as “a big sister at heart,” said her friend was a free spirit who enjoyed traveling with company.

“We actually have a dream together with one of our other friends to start a hostel in Costa Rica and we’re going to have an art station,” Simmons told KVUE. “He loves art.”

David Haisman, another close friend, said he was still in disbelief over Davis’ death, adding that he had left her with a drawing of a bird flying toward the sun before his death.

“I still feel like my heart is broken. Like I was stabbed. Like I was stabbed and I’m bleeding slowly,” he told a local outlet.

The Austin Police Department has not commented on the case, but said the investigation is ongoing.
