Popular music in the early 1990s was almost exclusively male.

The late 1980s brought hair metal bands to the top of the charts, and maybe a bubblegum pop goddess or two, but it’s rare to see a front-woman band in the wild or any woman on TV who looks or behaves by ‘ unconventional standards.

Women also make their music and will slowly create their movement. Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s friend Kathleen Hanna is in the process of creating a zine called the “Bikini Kill zine.” (via NME), . The zine’s mission was to spread the word that women were alive and present on the scene and that their voices were just as important as men’s, who were so worshiped at the time.

These women are hungry to tell the world that society’s definition of women and girls and the supposed box they keep forever, made up of the various ways men have always outdone them, are outdated and plainly wrong.

This message is the backbone behind the music, zine, art and credo created by these women in Washington, and will form Riot Grrrl’s manifesto. Riot Grrrl will appear in manifesto form in the second edition of Hanna’s zine, according to NME, and will soon take on a life and legacy of its own.

“We girls crave records and books and fanzines that speak to US that WE feel included and understood in our own way. We are angry at the society that tells us Girl= stupid, Girl= bad, Girl= weak,” the manifesto said.

Several groups have been associated with the movement, including L7, Babes In Toyland, and Huggy Bear.

Hanna Announces Her Memoir ‘Rebel Girl: My Life As A Feminist Punk’

Hanna gives insight into the book and the writing process as well.

In the middle of the orchid reel design, Hanna asks, “Who’s peeking out from under the orchid? It’s author Kathleen Hanna’s new memoir!”

“Yes, you heard that right,” he continued. “I wrote a book! It’s called ‘Rebel Girl.’ It will be available in May 2024.”

After telling readers where they can pre-order the book, Hanna continued, “It was a lot of work writing this book. I wouldn’t say it’s easy. I am CONFUSED. But it’s also really great and I got to look back at a lot of amazing and happy moments where I lost my creativity and found it again, and lost my confidence and got it back,” he continued. “And even in writing, I lose my confidence and get it back, and all the moments in between, so…”
