“Real Time” host Bill Maher connected the dots between a surprise purge by Democrats in San Francisco ahead of a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping and former President Donald Trump’s potential 2024 election victory.
This week, San Francisco hosted the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference where world leaders and business giants hobnobbed and President Biden held a one-on-one meeting with Xi.
But after years of decline in the Golden City, especially the homelessness that plagued its streets, Democrats at the local and state level rolled out the red carpet for the Chinese leader by cleaning up the sidewalks.
“I want to try your theory on why Trump killed it — not only in the party, but he beat Biden by a landslide,” Maher began Friday’s panel discussion. “Because Xi, President Xi of China, came to our country this week and met with Biden in San Francisco, and they had a little summit.”
“And they did something very interesting in San Francisco. I mean, I’ve done many, many jokes like comedians do about stepping and defecating in San Francisco and, you know, it’s a city that needs to be policed — so they do it! Because Xi is coming! Put aside the fact that you just cleaned up with the company that came?” Maher quipped. “OK, so they’re cleaning it up, they’re washing the streets, homeless people, you know, God forbid the guy who sent us fentanyl saw someone use fentanyl.”

“This, to me, is why Trump won, because he talked about, ‘I’m going to open a mental hospital.’ Again, I’m not saying this is necessarily a good solution,” continued Maher. “When he talks, ‘I’m going to put people in camps, immigrants,’ all these kinds of things, and people just see a place — a country, especially in a city that seems out of control. And the fact that Democrats can control it for three days, how about making it permanent?”
Gavin Newsom California Democrat Gavin Newsom, who has received a ton of presidential buzz as an alternative to the embattled Biden, admits the only reason public officials are waiting until APEC to clear San Francisco is to impress world leaders like Xi.
“I know people say, ‘Oh, they’re just cleaning this place up because all the high-end leaders are coming to town.’ That’s true, because it’s true,” Newsom said during a press conference last week, which received a backlash on social media.

The liberal comedian has sounded the alarm that Trump will win the presidency in 2024, repeatedly urging Biden, whose 81st birthday is Nov. 20, to step aside and allow a younger Democrat to take power.
He has compared Biden to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who famously refused to step down during the Obama presidency and was later replaced by Trump appointee Amy Coney Barrett, declaring the aging incumbent “Ruth Bader Biden.”
