Bill Maher Slams ‘Barbie’ Movie As ‘Preachy, Man-Hating, And A Zombie Lie’

It looks like Bill Maher is joining the list of conservatives who aren’t fans of the new “Barbie” movie.

Although the Greta Gerwig-directed feature has grossed more than a billion dollars at the box office, it has come under fire from conservatives who decry its “preachy” message. The latest to speak out against the box office juggernaut is HBO’s political commentator, who slams the film as “preachy, man-hating, and Zombie Lies.”

Bill Maher Slams New ‘Barbie’ Movie: ‘This Movie Is Very 2000-Late’

OK, “Barbie”: I hope it will not preach, hate men and #ZombieLie – unfortunately, it’s all three. What Are Zombie Lies? Something that is never true, but certain people refuse to stop saying it (tax cuts for the rich increase revenue, eg); OR something that WAS…

Earlier this week, the “Real Time With Bill Maher” host took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share his thoughts on the “Barbie” movie, which has divided audiences while still proving to be a box office favorite. Maher began his lengthy statement, writing, “OK, ‘Barbie’: I hope it doesn’t preach, hate people, and #ZombieLie – unfortunately, it’s all three.”

The 67-year-old political commentator then gave his definition of a Zombie Lie: “Something that is never true, but certain people refuse to stop saying it (tax cuts for the rich increase incomes, for example); OR something that USED to be true but isn’t anymore, but some people pretend it’s still true.” Maher says that the movie “Barbie” is a kind of “Zombie Lie” and then proceeds to give a short synopsis of the movie.

“Spoiler alert, Barbie fights the Patriarchy,” she wrote. “As far as the Mattel board that created it, made up of 12 white men! Patriarchy! Except there is a Mattel board in real life, and it’s 7 men and 5 women. OK, though-steven isn’t perfect, but not the way the board IN THE MOVIE – which takes place in 2023 – is portrayed. And actually no longer deserves the word ‘patriarchy.’ Yes, there is one, and the rest remain – but this movie is very LATE 2000.”

Maher later wrote, “At one point the Barbies had to win over the Kens, and they were told to do it by pretending to act helpless and not know how to do things. Helen Gurley Brown called, she wanted the premise back. Yeah, that’s a thing. I saw ‘Barbie’ with a woman in her 30s who said, ‘I don’t know a woman of any age who would act like that today.’”

“I know, I know, ‘How can I know about patriarchy, I AM a man!’ That argument is so old and so stupid,” Maher wrote. “Of course, none of us can know exactly what others are going through [in] life, but I can see the world around me, and I can read data. The actual Mattel board is a pretty close mirror of the country, where 45% of the 449 board seats filled last year in the Fortune 500 company were women.”

“Actually, I’m not an outsider – I live in the year we’re in. Barbie is fun, I enjoy it – but it’s #ZombieLie. And people who don’t follow the zombie lie don’t take the red pill – just stick to the CURRENT reality,” he concluded. “Let’s live in the year we live in! Hi Ken!!!”

Many users were not impressed with Bill Maher’s take on the movie “Barbie”, suggesting that he was not the film’s target audience. “Yes, here’s the review the whole world has been waiting for – a 67-year-old childless misogynist in a movie about a toy doll. I’m sure it will now make zero more dollars,” commented one user.

Bill Maher, after watching Barbie, I divorced my husband of 20 years to find my own Ken. Wish me luck!

Another sarcastic user said, “Bill Maher, after watching Barbie, I divorced my husband of 20 years to find my own Ken. Wish me luck!” Another movie fan who got in on the joke, replied, “Don’t look for Ken! Find yourself good Allan!”

I love Barbie movies and held the rank of CPT in the US Army in 1985. It was pretend. The Board should have offered Mom, who showed real talent, a position on the Board – A missed opportunity.

Despite this, some users have some genuine complaints about the movie. “I enjoyed the Barbie movie and held the rank of CPT in the US Army in 1985. It’s pretend,” wrote one user, adding, though they went on to say that “The Board should have offered Mom, who showed real talent, a position on the Board of Directors – A missed opportunity.”

The film is funny from the start because it writes Ken the same way Hollywood often writes women – without agency, hollow and in need of constant validation. If he thinks Ken’s way of writing is man-hating then what does he think of the rest of Hollywood’s writing?

“This movie is funny from the start because it writes Ken the same way Hollywood often writes women – without agency, hollow and in need of constant validation,” another user said. “If he thinks Ken’s way of writing is man-hating, then what does he think of the rest of Hollywood’s writing?”

Regardless of what Bill Maher thinks of the movie “Barbie,” it currently has an 88% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is being praised by audiences and critics alike. Now the only question on everyone’s mind is: will it get a sequel?
