Brian Laundrie’s mother has broken her silence.
Roberta Laundrie has been under the magnifying glass in recent months because of a letter she wrote to her son before Gabby Petito’s murder.
The letter reportedly contained information about buying a shovel, and helping bury the body … it was titled “burn after reading.”

Roberta defended herself in a court of law and said the letter was fun and games.
Her attorney filed a motion for a protective order in Sarasota County Circuit Court on Monday, March 7, seeking to block Gabby’s parents’ attempt to have the “burn after reading” letter admitted as evidence in an upcoming civil trial between the two families.
Attorneys Joe Petito and Nichole Schmidt claim the letter refers to shoveling, burying the body, and helping Brian get out of jail.
To show her support for this evidence NOT being public, Roberta wrote a letter to the court claiming the “burnt after reading” letter was written months before Gabby and Brian started their cross-country trip in the summer of 2021.
Roberta Says The Letter Is An Attempt To Repair Relations With Brian
“Although I don’t know the exact date I wrote the letter, I know I wrote it and gave it to Brian before Brian and Gabby left Florida for New York on June 2, 2021,” Roberta wrote.
She revealed that she and Brian bonded over books like “The Runaway Bunny” and “Little Bear.”
Roberta said one book, in particular, was titled “Burn After Writing” and it became an inside joke between her, Brian and Gabby. He explains this is why he wrote “burn after reading” on the envelope containing the letter.
He Writes Letters Months Before Gabby & Brian Go On The Road Trip
“Long story short, I’m trying to get in touch with Brian and mend our relationship as he plans to leave home – and I hope this letter will remind him how much I love him,” Roberta claimed. “The purpose of the letter was to reach out to Brian when he and I were going through a difficult period in our relationship. Brian and I have always had a very open and communicative relationship and in the months leading up to the trip, our relationship became strained. Brian and I share a love of stories and some of the language in the letter uses similar phrases to describe the depth of a mother’s love.”
He also claimed some references in the letter that people thought about Gabby and Brian had “nothing to do” with what happened to the couple.

“Even though I used words that seemed to have something to do with Brian’s actions and him taking Gabby’s life, I would have never thought that the events that transpired months later between Brian and Gabby would reflect the words in my letter,” he wrote. “The words in the letter cannot be a comment on the tragic situation because it was written several months before. My words to Brian are meant to convey my love and support to my son through a light and whimsical reminder that my love for him is undiminished and unshaken by the many miles of separation we will soon face.”
