Britney Spears Reflects On ‘Grief’ During 2007 Hair Shaving Incident

Pop star Britney Spears is reflecting on the grief she felt when she shaved her head in 2007.

The event, followed by him attacking a photographer’s car with an umbrella later that week, preceded a controversial 13-year conservatorship, which began in February 2008 and was not overturned by a judge until November 2021.

In her new memoir, “The Woman In Me,” Britney revealed that she felt “out of my mind with grief” after her aunt, Sandra Bridges Covington, died of ovarian cancer in January 2007. That same year, she was also involved in a fight custody dispute with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline. The two share two sons: Sean Preston, 18, and Jayden James, 17.

“With my head shaved, everyone is afraid of me, even my mother,” wrote Britney in a quote published by Many people magazine before the publication of the book. “Sending weeks without my son, I lost him, over and over again. I don’t even know how to take care of myself.”

“I’m willing to admit that in the throes of severe postpartum depression, abandonment by my husband, the torture of being separated from my two babies, the death of my adored aunt Sandra, and the constant drumming of the paparazzi, I would begin to think in some ways like children,” he added.

Britney Shaved Her Head To Stop Scrutiny Of Her Appearance

Britney Spears on why she shaved off all her hair in 2007:

In her memoir, Britney recalls how she shaved her head as a way to “push” against the constant criticism of her appearance. “I have been an eyeball growing up. I’ve been looked up and down, people telling me what they think of my body, since I was a teenager,” she wrote in another People magazine excerpt from her book.

Unfortunately, once her father Jamie Spears, 71, was named her conservator, she was no longer in control of the look she wanted. “Under conservatorship, I understand that those days are now over,” he wrote. “I had to grow my hair out and get back into shape. I had to go to bed early and take whatever medicine they told me to take.”

In 2007, Britney walked into Esther’s Hair Cutting Studio in Tarzana, California, and asked owner Esther Tognozzi to cut her hair. When the salon owner refuses, Britney grabs a razor and begins to shave her own hair while paparazzi snap photos through the salon window. Tognozzi later reflected on the incident in the 2019 documentary “Britney Spears: Breaking Point,” which aired on Channel 5 UK.

Tattoo artist Emily Wynne-Hughes also ran into the “Toxic” singer later that night after she had already left the hair salon. “[There was] crazy roaring outside,” Wynne-Hughes said at the time. “I’m not sure what happened, if there was a riot outside, and then lightning came. The door opened slowly and a hooded man walked in.”

“I noticed [Britney’s] the hair is gone. I remember asking him, ‘Why do you shave your head?’ And his answer was quite strange. It was, you know, ‘I just don’t want anyone to touch my head,'” she said. “I don’t want anyone to touch my hair. I’m sick of people touching my hair.'”

Britney Spears’ memoir “The Woman In Me” is scheduled to be released on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
