London’s famous Notting Hill Carnival reached its highest level of stabbings in seven years as knife-wielding men, 275 arrests and several hospitalizations marred the two-day spectacle.
The event, which runs from August 27 to 28, draws hundreds of thousands of attendees to the streets of England’s capital, and features live music, performances and entertainment.
Over 2 million attend this year’s annual festival, which has been hailed as Europe’s largest street party and one of the world’s largest celebrations of Caribbean music and culture.
But despite its joyous nature, violent riots and violent attacks hit the festival, leaving eight people stabbed while a 29-year-old man remains in a critical condition.
A video circulating on social media showed a group of young people running down the street dressed in black and wearing ski masks Monday night.

One individual was seen brandishing a large machete as police on horseback chased the group.
Another man was seen brandishing a large weapon as he approached a group of people at the carnival.
A 19-year-old teenager was taken to hospital in a “serious, but stable” condition following the stabbing as well.

“It is regrettable that for the second year in a row, Monday night at Carnival was marred by serious violence,” said Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan, who oversees policing operations.
Six other people, aged between 18 and 40, were stabbed in separate incidents and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said 275 people were arrested over the two days of the carnival, which saw a range of attacks, including possession of weapons, assault on police officers, possession of drugs and sexual offences.

Seventy-five officers were attacked during the festival, including six bitten, one sexually assaulted and one hospitalized, London’s Metropolitan Police said.
“No one disputes the importance of Carnival on London’s cultural calendar, and the vast majority of those who come will have a positive experience,” Adelekan said.
“However, we cannot lose sight of the stabbings, sexual assaults and assaults on police officers that we see.”

The annual carnival has taken place in London’s Notting Hill since 1966, and continues to serve as a way to show solidarity in the British capital’s growing Caribbean community.
The street festival is the UK’s largest celebration of culture, diversity and inclusion, featuring vibrant costumes, music, dance and food, and is second only to Brazil’s Rio Carnival in size.
Music legend Shaggy performed at this year’s event.
Last year, the carnival turned deadly after a 21-year-old man was stabbed and more than 200 arrests were made over the weekend of the festival.
London’s Metropolitan Police made 209 arrests, including eight for sexual assault, 36 for drug possession, 33 for weapons possession and 27 public order offences.
