In an excerpt from “The Woman In Me” published by People magazine on Tuesday, the “Toxic” singer described what it’s like performing with a giant snake around her shoulders.
“The plan was for me to sing ‘I’m a Slave 4 U,’ and we decided I would use a snake as a prop. It became an iconic moment in VMA history, but it was scarier than it looked,” Britney wrote in her memoir. “All I knew was to look down, because I felt like if I looked up and saw it, it would kill me.”

But what nobody knew was that while I was singing, the snake put its head in my face, straight at me, and started hissing,” he continued. “I thought, Are you serious now? A snake’s tongue darted at me. That’s right. Now. Finally, I got to the part I submitted again, thank God.”

In 2021, for the show’s twentieth anniversary, snake handler Michael Hano talked about what it was like to work with Britney Spears in an interview with the TODAY show. During the interview, he dismissed rumors that he was working with an albino python named Banana.
“It’s an amelanistic Burmese python, not an albino, because albino lacks all pigments and that type only lacks black pigment, so it’s amelanistic,” explained Hano. “All albino will be all white.” He also can’t remember the snake’s name, but admits that people “like to make things up”.

When asked what it was like working with the “Womanizer” singer, she said that it was “really good,” adding, “She’s very focused and at first she’s scared of the snake, but you can see that she’s able to focus and kind of push yourself to able to work with that and seem comfortable doing it.”
However, it is quite difficult to convince publishers to work with him one-on-one. “After a few little mistakes because these people are on television … sometimes they just don’t want to listen, then they realize that they better listen to the guy with the snake,” he said. “I finally had to be alone with him for a few minutes so he would understand. At one point, he said, ‘He’s not going to bite me, is he?’ And my answer is always, and my agent hates me for this, ‘Probably not.’”

“You’re crazy Britney Spears, you know, if this thing bites you, I think my career is over,'” he continued, saying that the joke helped the pop star feel more comfortable with the snake, which can weigh up to 200 pounds and grow up to 20 feet long. “He realized that I was completely honest with him, which is the route I like to take with these celebrities,” he added.
“This was on stage at the Metropolitan Opera House and when I first appeared, they made me sit in the audience while the band practiced their choreography,” he said. “I sat there for quite a while until they got ready for the snake to be brought in. All the dancers and Britney were rehearsing and even though the director said, ‘OK, take five,’ and everyone left the stage. to take a break, she kept rehearsing.”

“There’s no music playing and you can see him counting, you know, 2, 3, 4 or whatever, and practicing his own dance steps,” he continued. “I said, ‘Oh wow. Look at this. He’s really a hard worker. Same thing with snakes. At first, he was scared and uncomfortable with it, but he pushed himself with it and did really well, I have to say. “
