Brooke Shields Details Near Fatal Experience With Postpartum Depression

Brooke Shields has been an open book with her struggles with postpartum depression, but recent revelations reveal the true depth of her despair.

The 57-year-old actress and socialite first gained critical acclaim at age 12 for her lead role in Louis Malle’s 1978 film “Pretty Baby.” Marrying Chris Henchy in 2001 propelled her into the blissful world of motherhood; however, giving birth to her daughters- Rowan Francis and Grier Hammond- did come with its challenges.

In the early 2000s, the mother of two spoke to magazines- such as Guideposts- and appeared on the “Oprah Winfrey” show to openly discuss her struggle with postpartum depression.

In 2006, the “Lipstick Jungle” alum released a memoir titled “Down Came to the Rain,” in which she first opened up about her PPD. Once again, Shields took the stage with Marc Maron on “WTF With Marc Maron” to publicize the heartbreaking fight.

On Monday, “The Blue Lagoon” actress, who often talks about how she had sex as a child in Hollywood, had some choice words for Marcon’s podcast listeners about the near-death experience she had while dealing with postpartum depression.

Shields’ doctor stayed on the phone until she got home, telling her she needed to “get back on the medication right away.” The “Endless Love” star commented on the drug, saying, “I started to feel more alone, so I went … because obviously, I was a doctor at that point.”

Like many patients, the “Suddenly Susan” alum initially refused to take medication for her depression because she thought she could avoid the consequences. But his family members and friends begged him for help. “It’s very bleak,” Shields said. “My mother-in-law called me and said I have a dead eye. I finally said OK, to get everyone off my back.”

Shields’ New Documentary “Beautiful Baby” Reveals Her Rape Experience

The American actress and model had a traumatic experience that she kept secret for a long time. However, decades later, she feels the time is right to talk about how she was raped as a young girl in her new documentary.

In a recently released documentary, Shields said she was raped by a man she knew shortly after graduating from Princeton. The situation came about because he had trouble finding work despite his initial success as a child star.

She recounted how she had a late dinner with the unknown man with the idea that they would discuss work, but he reportedly convinced her to return to his hotel room after they finished, saying he would call her for a ride.

The “Blue Lagoon” actress further explained that the unnamed man sexually assaulted her upon reaching the room; she disappeared after they arrived and returned to the room naked.

The “What Makes a Man” actor said he went along with the attack because he couldn’t fight back for fear that doing so might trigger more serious physical injuries. “I was afraid I was going to choke,” he said. “So I didn’t fight much. I do not. I was completely frozen.”

Shields later asserted that she believed saying “no” just once would have stopped the act sufficiently, adding, “God knows I know how to separate from my body. I’ve practiced that… I got off in the elevator, and I got a cab me. I just cried in my friend’s apartment.”

The “Two and a Half Men” guest star said he couldn’t admit or face the issue after the ordeal, even after an assistant pointed out the obvious. She claims the assistant said, “That’s rape,” but replied, “I don’t want to believe it.”
