Florida family uses Apple AirTag to locate stolen luggage from North Carolina airport to suspect’s home

A family vacation takes a detour for a Miami family after their luggage is stolen while traveling for Christmas vacation, but thanks to technology, they are able to recover the stolen property.

“I want justice,” Catherine Gavino told the Queen City News on Tuesday.

Gavino and his family were traveling from the Miami area to the Carolinas via Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina, where the crime occurred.

When the family landed in Charlotte on Friday afternoon, they told FOX 46 Charlotte they couldn’t find one of their suitcases during baggage claim.

However, thanks to Catherine’s new Apple AirTag, the search begins for the stolen luggage.

Gavino said when he pulled up his cell phone, an AirTag hidden in his parents’ trunk showed it was on Interstate 85 and traveling west toward Gastonia.

When the AirTag was discovered, Catherine Gavino said her family rented and began following Apple devices around the neighborhood. The Queen City News AirTag was hidden in one of the family members’ trunks, indicating it was on Interstate 85 and traveling west toward Gastonia. QUEEN CITY NEWS

The Gavinos then gathered the rest of their bags, picked up their rental car and began following the AirTag into the neighborhood, but said they couldn’t find the exact location.

According to Gavino, AirTag has stopped displaying its location after a certain point.

The Gavinos called off the search, but continued on Christmas Day, hoping for better luck.

After dropping family members back to the airport, Gavino checked his AirTag location again, which revealed a location for a house in Gastonia.

According to Gavino, after calling the police, he not only found the house, but their missing luggage along with another bag of clothes from a different victim whose luggage was stolen from the airport.

Gavino told the Queen City News that Gastonia police informed him that “other people called with the same issue. And they also have AirTags.”

Once his family’s luggage was found again, much to their dismay, almost everything was gone.

“The police believe they might sell the clothes for money, who knows,” Catherine explained. “These are my parents, coming to the mountains to see the scenery of North Carolina, so for this to happen makes me sad, which is the reason to go after them…I wouldn’t have found them without this AirTag.”

According to police records, the suspect was arrested and charged with multiple felony thefts, including drug charges, and is being held on $10,000 bond.

The Gastonia Police Department did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
