Emma gave an update on the state of the “Pulp Fiction” actor’s health after first announcing his frontotemporal dementia in February.

She opened up about it in an op-ed for Maria Shriver’s Sunday paper on November 11. Emma told how scared she was to make an early announcement about her illness. However, he could finally “breathe” when it was over.

The model revealed that months after diagnosis, it was easier to understand her husband’s behavior and connect with the FTD community.

“Bruce’s FTD diagnosis is devastating, but it explains a lot of what we’ve been through.” Emma added, “His diagnosis allowed us to put what had once felt so confusing into a medical context.”

The 48-year-old found more ways to help Willis through the disease by reading “specific information” on the topic. He is also encouraged by people in his shoes.

Emma says, “With a specific diagnosis, you have the opportunity to find a community. You can connect with people who understand your story immediately. You don’t have to explain yourself.”

He made a distinction between the well-known Alzheimer’s disease and Willis’ condition. Emma said, “The world needs to know that not all dementia is Alzheimer’s and not all dementia affects memory. Diseases like FTD come with changes in behavior, personality, language or movement.”

Emma states that the Willis family’s goal is to “end FTD.” He noted that the first treatment that can modify FTD is being tested and is actively seeking volunteers.

As she researches the disease, Emma’s eyes open to the reality of someone else in her and Willis’ shoes. This incident finally changed his view of the world.

Emma notes that knowing so many other people through her family’s experience every day has made her stronger.
