A woman has pleaded guilty in California to driving under the influence after she crashed into a sign warning drivers not to drive while intoxicated.
Clarissa Hernandez, 27, of Texas, had sipped a pint of tequila minutes before getting into her Land Rover early Aug. 11 and plowing through an electronic sign in Palm Springs that read, “Don’t Drink & Drive,” according to a police statement.
The impact of the crash caused the sign to break, but police said the situation could have been worse because the driver who crashed avoided colliding with a group of pedestrians leaving a nearby theater.
Officers stationed at a checkpoint near the scene ran and saw Hernandez staggering away from his crumpled vehicle.
“His eyes were red, red and watery, and his speech was slurred. He was rocking back and forth continuously,” read the incident report quoted by station KESQ.

Hernandez even leaned on a broken sign at his side to steady himself as he walked, police said.
Far from showing remorse for what happened, the woman was described in the report as “angry, argumentative and hostile.”
When questioned about his alcohol consumption, Hernandez reportedly admitted that he had drunk the tequila just 10 minutes before entering the sign.

At one point, Hernandez allegedly swung his arms at an officer who tried to stop him from leaving the scene.
On Wednesday, Hernandez pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count each of driving under the influence of alcohol and resisting with intent, and was sentenced to three years of probation.
