A California woman had all four limbs amputated after she ate some tilapia contaminated with deadly bacteria, her friends said.
Laura Barajas, a 40-year-old mother, underwent life-saving surgery on Thursday after a months-long hospital stay.
“It was very heavy for all of us. really bad This could have happened to any of us,” Barajas’ friend Anna Messina told KRON.
Messina said Barajas fell ill a few days after eating fish he bought at a local market in San Jose and made himself at home.
“He almost lost his life. He was on a respirator,” Messina said.

“They put him in a medically induced coma. His fingers are black, his legs are black and his bottom lip is black. He has complete sepsis and his kidneys are not working,” he added.
Messina said Barajas was infected with Vibrio Vulnificus, a potentially deadly bacteria found in raw seafood and seawater.
“The way you can get infected with this bacteria is, you can eat something contaminated with it. [and] another way is to cut or tattoo exposed to the water where these bugs live,” UCSF Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Natasha Spottiswoode told KRON.

He said it was a particularly worrying infection for those with weakened immune systems.
There are approximately 150-200 cases of Vibro Vulnificus reported each year, according to the CDC. About one in five of those infected die.
The Barajas family is waiting to learn more about what happened and how to move forward.
Messina launched a GoFundMe campaign to help with Baraja’s family’s medical costs and his adjustment to his new life. More than $24,000 was raised.
