California mom says missing teen son’s body was lying in a morgue ‘like a piece of trash’

A California mother who spent months searching for her son said she found his body dumped in a morgue “like a piece of trash.”

Renee Lim’s son Ryan, 19, went missing on November 7 after sending a text message to his mother in the morning. Mom spent the next five months frantically searching the San Diego area in hopes of finding him.

Family and friends posted flyers around, according to the Sacramento Bee, and called homeless shelters and organizations, but he never showed up.

About a month into the search, a detective told Lim she should call the San Diego County Medical Examiner and ask if her son’s body was there, the Bee reported.

On December 7, the terrified mother, who was “fear-eaten” made a call that no parent wanted. She told the examiner what her son looked like, including “four highly visible, bright and unique tattoos” that she designed herself, her lawsuit — filed Tuesday — said.

However, the inspectors returned to the desperate mother with a negative answer, saying no one matched the description in their database. A woman Lim spoke with “assured Ms. Lim that if Ryan came to their office, he would be identified by the thumbprint he provided for his license,” according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Despite the demand for the fingerprints, the medical examiner’s office has an unidentified body in its possession and one belonging to Ryan.

Lim would only come to find out her son’s body was there on April 5 after her son’s friend saw a description on the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System that matched Ryan’s. He was in the care of the medical examiner all this time.

“Ryan was left alone and thrown away like a piece of trash,” Lim said, according to the Sacramento Bee.

“No one had an explanation for why my son was sitting there and was unknown for so long… no one cared enough was the reason, I think,” the distraught mother told McClatchy News.

“She was just a beautiful, beautiful child who didn’t deserve to be dumped and treated like she was by the medical examiner’s office,” he said at a press conference. “He sat in a body bag for five months, and no one cared enough to find out who he was.”

Her body was so decomposed that Lim was advised not to see her son, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Lim and Ryan’s father and brothers William and Brody Lim have now filed a $5 million lawsuit against San Diego County, accusing the medical examiner of making no effort to identify Ryan’s body.

“Someone decided that my son didn’t need any further investigation to find out who he was,” said the mother of two.

Ryan is a recovering ex-addict. Lim believes that may be the reason behind the delay in identifying him.

The district has 45 days to respond to their demands before the family will file them as a lawsuit, according to Bee.

The family remembers Ryan as having a “beautiful soul” and someone who “lived life to the fullest.” He loved to skate and skateboard and was very creative, according to his mother.

Ryan died on November 7 and was found dead on a sidewalk in San Diego. The medical examiner determined the cause of death was an overdose of fentanyl, methamphetamine and two prescription drugs, according to Bee.
