California reporter assaulted by teens who tried to steal his bike: ‘Sorry to see our city like this’

A San Francisco news reporter claims she was attacked by teenagers, who tried to steal her bike last weekend but got away with the robbery when she told them it was going to be on the news.

Dan Noyes, an award-winning investigative reporter for ABC7 Bay Area, was riding his bike at the Presidio National Park site, near the Golden Gate Bridge, when he encountered the large group.

“I came home and I saw a group of maybe 15 young teenagers, young teenagers who probably couldn’t drive yet, a lot on bikes,” Noyes said in the video posted to his social media account on Wednesday.

“And one of the kids suddenly rushed over and body blocked me from my bike. I hit the ground, my left elbow was really sore, hopefully it wasn’t a hairline break or something, but I nailed it hard to the ground,”

Noyes quickly wakes up as the kid grabs the bike and starts to run away but the reporter stops the would-be thief with the threat of public humiliation.

“I jumped up and ran after him and said ‘You’re going to be on Channel 7,’ the kids there just scattered,” Noyes said.

The shocked reporter said he was hospitalized and shared a photo of his left elbow, showing a sizable bruise along with a diagram of a radial head fracture, an injury he sustained and confirmed to SFist.

Noyes videotaped the teenagers fleeing in different directions, with one group heading south toward the Presidio Tunnel Peak while another group fled toward the iconic bridge.

He believed the perpetrator was a teenager who fled the area on foot while the rest of the group fled.

Following the attack, Noyes said he spoke to several witnesses who stopped and checked on him.

“I’m sorry to see our city like this,” he said to a tourist from Germany.

“My man has been a victim of crime before but this was one of the more personal and shocking.”

Noyes said US Park Police responded to the scene because he feared someone else was being targeted.

The Californian city has been riddled with crime and drugs for the past few months, as daylight robberies and open drug use have plagued the Golden City.

Last week, tourists turned victims when their belongings were stolen from their vehicles by a group of thieves in the Marina District, an upscale neighborhood located on San Francisco Bay, just east of where Noyes was attacked.

“We saw them take bags from our van and start putting them in the black SUV,” one tourist told the Post about the Sept. 13 robbery. “That’s when my friends started running and other people there honked. I heard someone yell, ‘Don’t run at them! They might have a gun!’

Theft is not the only problem facing the city as drug overdose deaths hit a record high last month with 84 deaths reported, 66 of which involved fentanyl.
