Cher SLAMS Artificial Intelligence Use As ‘Out Of Control!’

Cher, often credited as the first artist to use auto-tune on a track, has expressed her skepticism about “uncontrolled” artificial intelligence [AI] in the entertainment industry.

The 77-year-old singer expressed his thoughts on the technology after he heard an AI-generated version of himself covering a Madonna song. Cher’s comments are relevant at a time when creators and fans are using AI to produce music tracks using recognizable vocal samples from various artists, often without their consent.

Cher Has Criticized The Use Of AI For Entertainment Heavyweights

Cher has strongly criticized the use of AI in the entertainment industry and even suggested that it be banned. “Not AI,” the “I Got You Babe” singer began when asked about the booming technology during a recent interview. He continued:

“Someone made me sing a Madonna song and it was quite a shock. They don’t do it perfectly. But also, I’ve spent my whole life trying to be myself, and now they—— are going to take it away? And they’re going to do my acting and they’re going to do my singing? And I mean, it’s just… it’s out of control.”

The confession, which came in a 27-second video, and posted on X, getting multiple likes and responses like this read, “Cher knows what she’s talking about. And he was right.”

True to form, AP reports that the role of AI in Hollywood labor disputes has become increasingly prominent. Alongside more traditional conflicts over benefits, compensation and job security, technology has emerged as an important factor in contract negotiations that have led actors and writers’ unions to strike.

Although initially theoretical, conversations about AI between the Screen Actors Guild–Federation of Television and Radio Artists of America [SAG-AFTRA] and the Alliance of Film and Television Producers [AMPTP]representing the employer, quickly escalated into a contentious conflict.

The beef became public when the strike began several months ago on July 13. SAG-AFTRA shared a description of the studio’s AI position, which many actors on social media considered outrageous. The union said in a statement:

“We want to be able to scan images of background performers, pay them for half a day’s labor, and then use the individual’s likeness for any purpose indefinitely without their consent. We also wanted to be able to make changes to the main performer’s dialogue, and even create new scenes, without informed consent. And we want to be able to use a person’s image, likeness and presentation to train new generative AI systems without consent or compensation.”

The AMPTP issued a statement in response, claiming they were making proposals involving “AI proposals.” The proposal aims to protect the digital likeness of actors, requiring their consent to the creation and use of digital replicas or any digital modification of their performances.

Cher isn’t the only star who has spoken out against AI. Tom Hanks also had to send a warning to his millions of followers recently. The actor has warned them not to be fooled by advertisements that appear to be using his image.

He shared a screenshot from the video, showing a computer-generated image of what appears to be a younger version of the 67-year-old, dressed in a black suit and matching shirt.

“WATCH OUT!! There are videos out there promoting some dental plans with my version of AI. I have nothing to do with it,” said the “A Man Called Otto” actor in the caption of the Instagram post.

Although the post garnered nearly 130k likes, the two-time Academy Award winner’s followers didn’t have a chance to share their thoughts as she disabled the comments section.

The last time Hanks, who is the fourth-highest-grossing actor in North America, discussed AI was in May when he was a guest on “The Adam Buxton Podcast.” During the appearance, the “Cast Away” star had a thought-provoking conversation about the future of filmmaking and the evolving role of AI in Hollywood. The 1996 Kennedy Center Honoree stated:

“We saw this coming. We saw that there would be this ability to take zeros and ones inside the computer and turn them into faces and characters. Now, that’s just grown a billion-fold since then, and we’re seeing it everywhere.”
