Cheryl Burke ‘Choosing To Not Date’ As Part Of Sobriety Journey

Cheryl Burke lets the world in on her sobriety journey!

Burke was once the first pro dancer to win two consecutive times on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” but she has revealed that she is also a “functioning addict.” Although this phase of her life is now over, she discussed her experience on a recent episode of Facebook Watch’s “Red Table Talk” while also sharing more details about her sobriety journey.

The 38-year-old model told co-hosts Jada Pinkett Smith and Adrienne Banfield Norris about the numbing effects of alcohol that make people believe something is wrong when she’s not drinking. In his words:

“I use alcohol to numb myself. I’m an addict. I’m a functioning addict. When I’m not drinking, people say, ‘What’s wrong with you?'”

Burke revealed that she’s been sober for four years, but it’s been challenging lately, given her public divorce from ex-partner Matthew Lawrence. He elaborated on the split, saying:

“It’s not easy now, especially during this divorce. It waved at me. I don’t want this, my parents are divorced, and I’d love it otherwise, so that’s not the plan.”

Although the American dancer is not proud of the situation, she realizes that there are times when she needs to put herself and her composure first, taking it “one day at a time, one minute at a time.”

He also “chooses not to date” but only dates himself. Even so, she feels it’s “easier said than done” as she tries to adjust to the difference between loneliness and being alone.

Four years of sobriety is certainly something to celebrate, and Burke did so with an 11-second TikTok video. The clip features her posing in different jackets and sunglasses in various visual transitions, set to Billie Eilish’s award-winning song “Bad Guy.”

He added a message to the video showing the reason for his celebration while leaving emojis in the caption along with hashtags, some of which included “#soberlife,” “#onedayatatime,” “#soberbirthday,” and “#sobrietyrocks.”

Before the celebration, the television host admitted in an episode of his “Burke in the Game” podcast how helpful it was to publicize his sobriety struggle because “once you call it out, the shame goes away.”

He explained at the time, “I’m really trying to call it because that’s the name of the game. I don’t want to have to have that discussion.”

Burke believes it’s important to hold himself accountable, which he tries to do by sharing his experiences with his listeners. Speaking of which, The Blast reports that he previously spoke about his alcohol addiction challenges in October 2021 with Elizabeth Vargas on her “Heart of the Matter” podcast.

Despite being a functioning alcoholic, the brilliant dancer was able to advance in her professional life. She also lived a “very Olympic lifestyle” when she competed and before moving to LA for “DWTS.”

During that time, he made several promises to himself, including never drinking alone, never drinking before 5pm, and never drinking on weekdays, among others. They all never worked because he was deep in the bottle.

Burke’s alcohol addiction became so bad that he started drinking all week, with his mind never stopping him as he drank to numb himself and get through each day.

“I Can Do That” Star Decides To Quit ‘DWTS’ After 26 Seasons

Burke seems to have new and different plans — far from dancing — which she elaborated on in the October episode of her podcast, revealing her plans to leave “DWTS.” The revelation came after she asked her dance partner Sam Champion to be kicked out of the competition’s 31st season.

She mentioned that the season marks her last on the show and as a dancer, which is difficult for her to quit as she has been a star for 26 seasons. Some discussion had previously arisen regarding her desire for offspring, hence her decision to stop dancing. However, the “DWTS” champion had a much different reason, saying:

“The reason is because I want to be okay with the uncertainty of what life will throw at me. Until I close one chapter, how can I expect another to open?”

Even with this certainty, she doesn’t want to leave the “DWTS” family entirely but hopes to become a correspondent or host on the show.
