Chief strategist for DeSantis-aligned super PAC steps down with less than a month until Iowa

The chief strategist of the most prominent PAC supporting the presidential campaign of Florida Gav. Ron DeSantis in 2024 said he was resigning amid reports of internal strife that has rocked the organization.

Jeff Roe announced his resignation from Never Back Down late Saturday after the PAC chairman pinned the recent firing of three top officials on “issues of mismanagement and conduct” in a statement to the Washington Post for a story detailing turmoil within the group.

“I cannot in good conscience continue to be associated with Never Back Down in light of the statement in today’s Washington Post,” Roe said in a statement posted on X.

“It is untrue and an unwelcome distraction at a critical time for Governor DeSantis,” Roe added. “I am resigning with immediate effect. Governor DeSantis has been an outstanding governor and I look forward to him being the 47th President of the United States.”

Since late November, Never Back Down has been hemorrhaging at least five other senior executives, including three who were fired, as well as a founding chief executive and board chairman who both resigned.

I can’t believe it ended this way. I am very proud to have worked alongside these men and women at NBD 24/7 for the past nine months to save the country. Good luck the next 28 days and wake up. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there with you. pic.twitter.com/Rh4oQQ1tAE

“Following mismanagement and conduct issues, including numerous unauthorized leaks containing false information, senior officials have been terminated,” Never Back Down chairman Scott Wagner told the Washington Post about the firing.

“We don’t have time to indulge in false narratives from those with ulterior motives.”

An attorney representing the cannery workers contacted Wanger after the Washington Post sought comment, and he adjusted his statement to hedge his claim, the report said.

“Following a number of opinions regarding issues of mismanagement and conduct, including some who believe there appear to be many unauthorized leaks containing false information, NBD and some senior officials parted ways,” he said.

A bitter feud has surrounded Never Back Down in recent weeks, according to several reports.

During discussions about the budget, Roe came close to falling out with Wagner, NBC News reported in November.

“You need to toughen up a—, Scott,” Roe told Wanger, according to the report.

“Why don’t you come here and get it?” Wagner responded, emerging from his chair before being arrested, the outlet reported.

Never Back Down has been a key part of DeSantis’ campaign for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination.

Although a separate entity from the campaign, the PAC has spent more than $100 million in support of his White House bid.

“We have full confidence in NBD’s ground game and field operations, which are second to none,” DeSantis campaign communications director Andrew Romeo told The Post Sunday.

“There is an outstanding team and we appreciate their independent efforts to fight for Ron DeSantis.”

Despite his apparent frustration with the leadership at the PAC, Roe stressed his commitment to DeSantis.

“I am proud of the team we have built at Never Back Down and the incredible work and integrity of every loyal professional in the organization,” he said in his statement. “This is a team of political warriors and their tenacity and dedication over the past nine months has helped put Governor Ron DeSantis in a strong position.”

“I’m sorry I couldn’t be with you,” Roe said again in a post on X.

Never Back Down did not respond to a request for comment from The Post Sunday.

DeSantis has relied heavily on a strong performance in Iowa, which is the first GOP contest of 2024 scheduled for January 15, 2024.
