Newly released body cam video shows Baltimore police shooting a man who attacked them with a machete and threw a knife after he entered a convenience store naked.
Police responding to a report of a burglary at about 9:15 a.m. on Dec. 30 found a naked man wearing only socks standing on a corner in the 2000 block of West Street, the Baltimore Banner reported.
Security camera footage showed the unclothed man, later identified as 37-year-old Russom Gebretsadik, outside a convenience store and then walking in, where an employee told police the still-naked man then went upstairs.
Body cam video released last week shows police searching for the man, who they saw on the stairs behind the building.
“What are you doing naked, man,” an officer asked the suspect, who was now clothed and feigning ignorance.
“You gonna play with me, bro?” the police asked.

Moments later, the man threw an object at the officers and they retreated for help with ballistic shields.
An officer thought the suspect was throwing feces at them, but later in the video they are heard saying they believed it was food.
The footage shows police moving through several rooms before doors are opened and an officer in armor – identified as James Stokes, a nine-year veteran of the department – steps forward.

Gebretsadik “emerged from behind the door” and began “advancing” towards officers, who saw he had a combat knife and a machete, a police spokesman said.
Stokes was seen either being pushed or falling as he fired five times at Gebretsadik, hitting him once in the leg, after the man threw the knife at police.
The officer was seen climbing the stairs and handcuffing the suspect as he sat on the floor.

Police Commissioner Richard Worley told reporters that officers applied a tourniquet to Gebretsadik’s leg, “probably saving his life.”
No officer was seriously injured in the incident.
The top cop added that police also found a “device” in Gebretsadik’s room. The item was investigated by the police bomb squad and the Baltimore Fire Department.

No explosives were recovered from the building, a police spokesman said, but several items were found, including a bottle of lighter fluid with liquid, a gas can with liquid, a jug of oil with liquid, two motors, a lighter, a can of gas nozzle and two circuit boards.
Authorities have not identified the liquid.
Gebretsadik has been released from the hospital and charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and related charges.
His trial is scheduled to begin Monday.
It is unclear whether Gebretsadik was the burglary suspect to whom police were initially called, although court records show his home address is where the shooting took place, WMAR reported.
