Audience members booed former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie when Fox News introduced him and seven other candidates by name at Wednesday’s Republican primary debate — and again when he sparred with Vivek Ramaswamy earlier in the proceedings.
Christie has distinguished himself from his peers by positioning himself as an unapologetic critic of former President Donald Trump, who has alienated some corners of the party that recall his staunch support for the former president in 2016.
The former Garden State governor seemed unfazed by the animosity.
“This is the conclusion. Someone has to stop normalizing this behavior,” Christie said at the top of the second hour of the debate when asked about the criminal case against Trump. “Whether you believe the alleged crimes are right or wrong, that conduct is beneath the office of the president of the United States.”
After another round of boos, the former federal prosecutor spoke directly to the crowd.

“This is the great thing about this country,” he said. “Booing is allowed, but it doesn’t change the truth.”
At that point, biotech entrepreneurs spoke up.
“President Trump, I believe, is the best president of the 21st century,” said Ramaswamy, who suggested Christie run for a contributor spot on MSNBC instead of president. “Honest to God, your claim that Donald Trump is driven by grudges and grievances would be more credible if your entire campaign wasn’t based on grudges and grudges against [him].”
Chris Christie and Vivek Ramaswamy battle it out on the debate stage.
The clash about Trump came about an hour after Christie took a series of verbal jabs at Ramaswamy, saying: “I’ve had enough tonight with a guy who sounds like ChatGPT.”
“The last person in one of these debates, Bret, who stood in the middle of the stage and said, ‘What’s a skinny guy with an odd last name doing here?’ is Barack Obama,” Christie said, referring to Ramaswamy’s self-deprecating opening remarks.
“And I’m afraid we’re dealing with the same kind of amateurs.”
