Exclusively with Vanity Fair, Hemsworth shared he was taking a “break” from acting. This happened after the actor learned during the filming of the Disney+ documentary series “Limitless” that he was prone to Alzheimer’s disease.

“They took all my blood tests and did a bunch of tests, and the plan was to on camera tell me all the results and then talk about how you can improve this and that,” Hemsworth told the publication, recalling when he was told the news.

However, it wasn’t until he starred in the final episode of the series, which centered on “death and facing your own mortality,” that the enormity of the news really dawned on the actor.

According to a report by the National Institutes of Health, one in four individuals has one copy of the APOE4 gene, which is the determining gene that triggers Alzheimer’s. Also, only 2 to 3% of the population has both.

In Hemsworth’s scenario, blood work revealed that his genetic makeup had two copies of the gene, one from his father and one from his mother, which increased his chances of developing the condition in the future.

Although the news was somewhat overwhelming, the actress said that she and her family—including her parents and siblings—have been handling it well.

He shared, “It was confronting at first, but quickly, it became a kind of self-deprecating joke, if you will. This is how I, my family, have a sense of humor. And that’s life, so…”

For his part, Hemsworth has taken healthy steps to reduce his chances of developing Alzheimer’s in the future, which include stress management, sleep management, nutrition, movement and fitness.

Now better prepared for the future, the father of three is grateful for being given the opportunity to get Alzheimer’s information early enough.

“I feel grateful that I have my arsenal of tools to prepare myself as best as possible and prevent things from happening that way,” the actor said.

Chris Hemsworth On Next Role

Hemsworth did not reveal how long he will be gone to spend time with his family. However, when he returns, there will be many changes in the type of roles he chooses to star in.

He said to Vanity Fair“If something is going to take me away from my family and my kids, it has to be a positive, constructive and collaborative experience.”

One possible feature is filming “smaller, more grounded pieces,” such as dramas where he doesn’t have to learn fight choreography or wear heavy costumes.

Meanwhile, fans can watch the actor in “Limitless,” which premieres on Disney+ on November 16. The actor has also completed filming his role in the action film “Extraction 2,” which is set to be released in 2023.
