Forget about breaking the glass ceiling.
Former New Jersey governor Chris Christie said that Nikki Haley would “eat a glass” for the chance to be Donald Trump’s running mate in the race to defeat President Joe Biden in the presidential election.
Christie claimed he spoke this weekend with an unnamed South Carolina politician “who knows him very well” and that the person suggested Haley would jump at the chance to join former President Trump’s ticket.
“I said, ‘Am I reading this wrong?’ And he said to me, ‘Governor, he’s going to eat glass to get the vice presidential nomination under Trump.’ That’s how ambitious he is,” Chris said on ABC’s “The View.”
The former New Jersey governor, who has refused to be Trump’s bad guy, praised Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for closing the door on him serving as Trump’s No. 2.
“Give DeSantis credit for this. He said he wouldn’t take the vice presidency under Trump under any circumstances,” he said. “Nikki Haley wouldn’t say that.”
While typically avoiding making the odds explicit, Haley has repeatedly insisted on the campaign trail: “I’m not playing for either.”

Recently, Haley and Trump have begun increasingly trading barbs on the stump at a higher tempo. The Trump campaign has begun using the “Kiss of Death” e-mail blitz, usually reserved for DeSantis, against him.
Complaints about Haley serving as Trump’s vice president have reached a fever pitch in recent days, with Trump asking some of his allies for their opinion on adding Haley to the ticket, CBS reported.
DeSantis has repeatedly grilled Haley on the veepstakes and her campaign even launched a tongue-in-cheek website for Trump-Nikki 2024.
Several allies of the 45th president, including Donald Trump Jr. and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has warned of an uprising if Haley gets the VP.

“Nikki Haley can’t beat him because she doesn’t want to,” Christie continued. “If lightning strikes him tomorrow, and he gets the nomination, he will take it. But that’s not what he plays.”
Christie’s sling and arrow at Haley comes as the former South Carolina and US Ambassador to the UN has captured strong poll numbers from New Hampshire, a state where Christie has effectively staked his campaign.
With Haley on the way, his climb to the nomination got even steeper.
A group of Republicans, keen to see Trump’s primary campaign torched, has urged Christie to step aside. This includes a Haley-aligned Super PAC, SFA Fund Inc, publicly calling on Christie to quit, arguing that the New Jersey Republican has “some helpful implications for Trump.”
Tom Boucher, a former member of the New Hampshire steering committee for Christie, recently jumped on Haley thought he had a better chance of winning.

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, who has supported Haley, has even publicly urged Christie to quit.
Underpinning much of that push is the belief that many Christie voters will flock to Haley, bolstering her already difficult chances of beating Trump in the Granite State.
“How insulting to my voters that you would think that they would immediately just waltz to Nikki Haley, even though Nikki Haley has called Donald Trump the right president for the right time,” Christie said.
Christie, who previously endorsed Trump in 2016 but has since said he regrets doing so, also fired back at Sununu earlier Wednesday.
“Since Chris started working for Nikki Haley and became Nikki Haley’s employee, Chris Sununu has not been the same,” he said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

Haley’s campaign declined to comment on the record.
Christie has established himself as the Trump attack dog of the 2024 GOP pack. He made it clear on Wednesday that he would not vote for either President Biden, whom he described as incapable of being commander-in-chief, or Trump.
“I’m anxious to see who the third choice is,” he said, while also throwing words at environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
The New Hampshire primary is scheduled for January 23. Trump averaged 46.3%, followed by Haley at 24.8% and Christie at 10.5%, according to the latest RealClearPolitics aggregate.
Nationally, Haley recently passed DeSantis for second place in average RCP.
