Clutch your pearls: See Prince William get all wet in NYC visit

He wakes up in the city that never sleeps — and eats a lot from oysters.

Prince William, 41, landed in New York City on Monday for a solo tour – leaving behind his wife, Kate Middleton, 41 – and declared that it was “great to be back in the United States.”

Then he got his feet wet — literally — during a visit to Governors Island.

Arriving there straight from Newark Airport, the Prince of Wales donned waders, a neon orange life jacket and a pair of bright yellow gloves to meet with the Billion Oyster Project (BOP), a non-profit organization working to help restore oyster reefs to New York Harbor .

The project cured oyster shells for a year, collecting them, in part, from dozens of restaurants such as popular NYC spots Crave Fishbar and Grand Banks. They went through a long process to restore oyster reefs that help protect the city from storm surges, among other benefits.

During his visit, his first state visit since 2014, Prince William removed handfuls of oysters from their cages and spoke to stunned students from the New York Harbor School MAST Center oyster hatchery, whose meeting with the royal was kept secret until Monday morning. .

The prince also met four restaurateurs, including Crave Fishbar owner Brian Owens, who has donated 3 million oyster shells since 2015 — and was surprised to see how interested Prince William was.

“I was surprised at how interesting he was and how many questions he had, and I thought he had some good questions,” Owens said.

Ben LoGuidice, who works in remote settings management, noted that the prince was “very interested” in the process.

In his speech, Prince William declared that “no one does optimism and ingenuity like the American people,” and he continued to embrace the American spirit by referencing former President John F. Kennedy.

“I know our generation can take the bold actions we need to make changes towards a healthy and sustainable world,” the prince said. “Challenges may feel great, but as John F. Kennedy taught us, we take on challenges not because they are easy, but because they are hard. And important.”

On Tuesday, the prince – whose visit comes during UN General Assembly week – is set to meet with a group of first responders to talk about mental health. He also plans to attend the Earthshot Prize Annual Innovation Summit.

However, one topic of conversation won’t be discussed while she’s stateside, according to the Sunday Times: her rocky relationship with her brother, Prince Harry, 39.

Although he will be just hours away from Harry, who lives in California and his wife of 42 years, Meghan Markle, William does not plan to field questions about their apparent split during any media interviews, the outlet reported.
