Colin Kaepernick Recalls Adoptive Parents Pushing Back On His ‘Blackness’ While Growing Up

Colin Kaepernick is getting more candid about the struggles he endured as a black child of white adoptive parents in a new interview.

The controversial football player, known for being outspoken about racism, held nothing back when he spoke about his struggles growing up in a “troubled” household, despite excelling in baseball, basketball and football at Pitman High School in California.

He spilled the tea during a television appearance to discuss his graphic memoir, “Colin Kaepernick: Change the Game.”

When Colin was adopted by a white couple based in Wisconsin — Rick and Teresa, he never thought that his ‘blackness’ would be a problem for them. However, that’s exactly what he experienced with the couple who have two biological children – a daughter Devon and a son Kyle.

Before going into detail about what happened in his childhood home, the 35-year-old explained that while he knew his parents loved him, there were “very problematic things” he was going through.

One such thing was the pushback she received from her mother when she wanted to get cornrows. The parents called the hairstyle “unprofessional” while claiming she would look like a “little thug.”

Instead of rejecting it, the conversation informed her decision to keep her hair long, becoming her now famous afro. “I think it’s important to show, ‘No, this can happen in your own home.’ And how do we move forward collectively while addressing the ongoing racism,” he told CBS News.

Racial divisions in his home prompted the free agent to seek community elsewhere, eventually pursuing a career in football due to the significant number of black players in the league.

Despite his prowess in the game, Colin has not played on the field since 2016, when he knelt during the national anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality in the United States.

Prior to that, the Wisconsin-born star had made waves for remaining seated as his teammates and others sang the national anthem before games during the preseason that year.

“You know, pretty much the message of the book is that I have no control over all these situations. But I control how I react to it, I control how I prepare for it, and I believe that by doing that, good things will happen,” added Colin.

Although he opted out of his contract with the 49ers in 2017 and recently settled a lawsuit with the National Football League, the civil rights activist still has plans to play on the field. In his words:

“Five, six days a week I still get up at 4:30; I went to get my training. Yes, the spirit is still there, and the ability is still there.”

While Colin continues to channel his activist passion for good, his personal life takes a big leap. The Blast reports that Colin and his longtime partner, Nessa Diab, were overjoyed when they welcomed their first child together last August.

The new mum took to Instagram to share a black-and-white image of herself smiling as she leaned on her beau’s shoulder, with her arm for support.

Colin, who held their bundle of joy in his arms across his bare, tattooed chest, smiled into the camera. In her caption, the television personality informed fans that she and the former quarterback welcomed their baby a few weeks ago.

Diab explained that while they were excited about their family’s progress, she was hesitant to share the good news online. After touching on postpartum recovery, which she admits isn’t easy, and calling herself a “complete mama bear,” the co-founder of “Kem Kenali Anda Hak” said:

“Colin is the best dad ever, and I’m so grateful that he’s been by our side for every second of this journey.”

He ended the caption by appreciating the crowd’s support and showing his love and sign, “Love, The Kaepernicks.” The post has received over 155k likes and thousands of congratulations in the comments section.

“So happy for you and Colin to welcome the little one into the world. You’re here to make it better,” someone said. A second person commented, “So happy for you and your family,” and “The View” co-host Sunny Hostin claimed she was “over the moon” for the couple.
