Connor McGregor believes the third time is the charm when facing his most famous rival, Nate Diaz.
For UFC fans, it’s no news that the Irish martial artist and the American fighter have had a long-standing rivalry going back several years and have seen them fight in the Octagon twice — McGregor won at UFC 202 in August 2016, while Diaz emerged victorious at UFC 196 in March 2016.
However, it seems that the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight and two-time lightweight champion won’t rest without getting a trilogy with Diaz and proving he is, indeed, the better fighter.

McGregor, during a recent visit to Madison Square Garden after catching a New York Rangers hockey game, opened up about how he wants to get back in the ring after two years and who deserves the time.

During a chat with Factz, the 34-year-old was asked who he believed his best opponent to have had the most impressive skills, and unsurprisingly, the star athlete revealed it was Diaz. “Diaz is a tough person,” he admitted.
However, McGregor soon dropped the bombshell that he hopes to step into the ring again with the “Final Fighter 5” winner, saying, “I hope to complete the trilogy against Nate.”
When and where the fight will take place is still unknown, but there have been rumors of a third fight between the pair for some time. Back in December 2022, McGregor floated the idea of doing a trilogy with Diaz in a series of since-deleted Twitter rants.
A Possible Trilogy Between Diaz & McGregor Has Been Discussed
According to reports, the former boxer, who goes by ‘Notorious’ was inspired to face Diaz for the third time after watching a promotional video for Dana White’s Power Slap league.
“Is there a coin that can go first? How long do they have to recover before they throw their counter? Or is it over if they kod? Attract. I attend one of these 100%. Does this belong to Dana? Wtf is Dana crazy hahaha. I’m in,” McGregor wrote.
In a subsequent tweet, he took a dig at his lifelong rivalry, writing, “Me Vs Nate on it for the title hahahaha maybe that’s the title you’ll have a better chance of winning Nate you little slapper hahahaha.”

Diaz, who rose to fame for handing McGregor his first loss in the UFC, didn’t hesitate to respond to Notorious’s request declaring, “I already beat you in that match too,” before adding, “If the submission isn’t allowed, I knock you out faster from Floyd [Mayweather Jr.] do. But it’s real so I strangle you better and faster than [Khabib Nurmagomedov] do. Boom Roasted.”
Before the controversial trash talk on Twitter, Diaz had hinted at his desire to have a rematch with McGregor during an interview with Inside Fighting, confident it would happen. However, at the time, the 37-year-old Californian stated that it was not the right time for the trilogy to happen.
