Actress Constance Wu recently revealed that a producer on the 2015 sitcom “Fresh Off the Boat” sexually harassed her while on the show. The actor was on the Asian American show between 2015 and 2020, when its sixth season aired.
Around the time the sixth season was announced for renewal, Wu posted several tweets complaining about the series and revealed that the news had made him “cry”. The backlash from her tweet reportedly led to the actress attempting suicide, after which she stayed away from social media completely for three years.

With Wu’s recent return to social media, the 40-year-old revealed that he was sexually harassed and bullied on the set of “Fresh Off the Boat.” Although the culprit was not named, the actor said that he was one of the producers of the sitcom.

In an interview with Atlantic to talk about and promote her new book, “Make a Scene,” Wu talked about being the object of “sexual harassment and threats” by one of the producers of her ABC show.
During an interview Friday, the 40-year-old revealed that he couldn’t talk about the situation at the time because he wanted to protect the show and how it affects the Asian American community.
“My publisher really encouraged me to write [about] it’s … I’m like, ‘No, I’m done with that chapter in my life,'” the actress said (per Many people). “And then I finally realized that it was important to talk about it because I had a pretty traumatic experience in my first few years on the show, and no one knew about it because the show was historic for Asian Americans.”

Wu went on to explain that since the show was the only television program starring an Asian American in decades, he didn’t want to tarnish its reputation. He added, “I kept my mouth shut for a long time about the amount of sexual harassment and threats I received in the first two seasons of the show.”

She Has a ‘Bad Feeling’ About Periods

“Crazy Rich Asians” further revealed that she was finally able to say “no” to her abuser when the show began airing. He said that he was able to “handle” the situation without having to go public and damage the series’ reputation.
Wu recalled, “I was no longer afraid of losing my job. That’s when I could start saying ‘no’ to the harassment, ‘no’ to the threats from this particular publisher. And, so I thought, ‘You know what? I took care of it; nobody who needs to know, I don’t need to tarnish the reputation of this Asian American producer, I don’t need to tarnish the reputation of the show.'”

However, the actress revealed that the settlement only solved the initial problem and her “bad feeling” about the period continued. He said, “But that doesn’t necessarily solve the problem. The problem is that bad feelings aren’t going to go away just because you’re going to. They’re bound to come out somewhere.”

In 2019, a sixth season was announced for the Asian American show which disappointed Wu. The actor took to Twitter to express his feelings about the announcement; however, he received so much backlash that Wu tried to kill himself.

The 40-year-old man spoke about that period in his recent interview, revealing that most of the messages he received labeled him proud because of his hit movie, “Crazy Rich Asians. He continued, “When really, I want to have a new history. where I don’t have to start the show with all these memories of abuse.”
The actress added, “The tweets that came out were emotions that I suppressed that I thought I could get rid of, come out in other ways.”

According to the “Hustlers” actor, a small group of people at work knew about the harassment directed at him. Wu reveals that every time he sees them befriending an unnamed abuser, he feels betrayed but knows they have little power.
The actor recalled (per Many people), “Few people know [the harassment] is happening, and going to work every day and seeing people who know that he is sexually harassing me, being ‘friends’ with him, feels like a betrayal every time. And I don’t blame them because he could have fired them too.”
Wu admitted that while he loved working on the series and everyone involved, it held bad memories for him. “I love everyone on the crew, and I love working on the show, but it has a history of abuse that started with it, and even though I ran it after two years,” she said through tears. “I’m looking forward to getting a clean slate.”
