Cops sent cats of suspected Gilgo Beach killer’s wife to kill shelter after raiding home: report

Police searched the home of Gilgo Beach serial killer suspect Rex Heuermann, leaving his family’s beloved cat at a shelter after tearing through their Long Island home during an exhaustive 12-day search of the property, according to reports.

Asa Ellerup, 59, said he returned to the Massapequa Park home he shared with the accused killer for more than two decades to find it had become a disorganized nightmare, with boxes strewn about and floorboards ripped apart.

Melissa Moore – the daughter of the “Happy Face” serial killer who had helped Ellerup after Heuermann’s arrest on July 13 – told the US Sun that the family also discovered authorities had dumped their two cats at the shelter.

“When Rex was arrested […] they go into the house, the police and the feds. And then they said, ‘Listen, we have a warrant. We will find this house. We’re going to be here for a while,’” Moore told the outlet in an article published Sunday.

The family was then told to pack their bags overnight and vacate the premises – and was not given enough time to find their two beloved cats amid the chaos, Moore said, adding that Ellerup’s son Christopher, who has learning disabilities, was able to find his service dog Stewie.

“They left thinking the police would take care of the animal because they left the house without any notice,” Moore told the Sun.

“Immediately, the authorities trapped the cats and sent them to a shelter,” he claimed.

Fortunately, the family was later able to locate their cats at a shelter and bring them home, Moore said.

“The lawyer representing Asa found out that his animals were in a shelter and arranged for them to be moved before they could be killed,” he told the Sun.

Moore has launched a fundraiser to help the family, saying she relates to them because of her own experience with her father, Keith Hunter Jesperson, who was convicted of raping and killing eight women in the early 1990s.

“In my time working with families like this, I’ve known law enforcement to put families in hotels when they seize the house for evidence. This is not the case for Asa, Christopher and Victoria,” Moore told the Sun about Ellerup and her children.
