Coroner in ‘Doomsday Mom’ Lori Vallow Daybell case has ‘nightmares’ about slain kids

The Idaho coroner overseeing the case of “Doomsday Mom” Lori Vallow Daybell said she still has “nightmares” about the convicted killer’s children.

Fremont County Coroner Brenda Dye, 46, said she is struggling to understand why Vallow Daybell killed Tylee Ryan and Joshua “JJ” Vallow.

“It’s hard to imagine someone doing that to someone they love and care about. I have children and I can’t imagine what the family has been through,” Dye told the East Idaho News of the children, both of whom are believed to have been killed as part of their mother’s imaginary plot with her then-boyfriend, Chad Daybell.

Tylee, 16, and 7-year-old JJ went missing in September 2019, and were found in a shallow grave on the Daybell property in June 2020.

At the Vallow Daybell trial earlier this year, jurors learned that Tylee had been burned and dismembered, while JJ – who has autism – had been tied up and wrapped in plastic, the East Idaho News said.

“I still have nightmares. Every time we face a new trial…I have to relive everything and all those emotions come back. Many cases are more difficult than others, but this one was very difficult for me,” Dye explained of the experience.

Vallow Daybell, 50, is currently serving three life sentences for the murders of his children and conspiracy to kill Chad Daybell’s first wife, Tammy Daybell.

Dye – who also has 22 years of experience as an EMT – was just a few months into his first term as coroner when Tammy died of asphyxiation in October 2019, he explained to the East Idaho News.

Within days of Tammy’s funeral, Vallow Daybell and Daybell – a self-confessed apocalypse – took off for Hawaii, where they later married before being arrested by authorities a few months later.

The cases of Tammy Daybell’s death and the disappearance of Vallow Daybell’s son involved people Dye knew, which made the horrific story even harder to deal with, he told the East Idaho News.

She is only the second woman to serve as Fremont County coroner, and is one of only a few female coroners in Idaho, the outlet said.

“It takes someone who can face death. When people are dying, they need compassionate people there to help them through,” Dye said of her demanding role.

Going into his second term, he said, his main goal is to support local families through the grieving process and help the families of the victims.

Chad Daybell, 55, is set to stand trial in connection with the murders of Tammy, Tylee, and JJ next year.
