An Indiana couple who found a missing dog were searching for the puppy’s owner when they found an elderly man lying helpless on the ground for at least two days before he was found.
A pair of good Samaritans came across the wandering pup on National Dog Day after he got off his leash Saturday afternoon, authorities said.
As the two went door-to-door looking for the dog’s owner, they heard screams coming from a house that caught their attention, the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office said.
The man went inside the home and found the elderly man on the ground where he had been “immobile” for at least several days, the sheriff’s office said.

The two immediately called 911 and the man was rushed to the hospital. A rescue worker told deputies that if he hadn’t been found right away, he probably would have died that way, authorities said.
“Thank you to these good Samaritans for their kindness in taking care of the dog but also potentially saving the elderly man,” the sheriff’s office said.
“Dogs are truly man’s best friends. Even if it’s not the owner, this puppy that got away could potentially save a life.”
The dog, who has been nicknamed Daisy by sheriff’s deputies, was taken to animal control and was soon reunited with her owner.
“He returned home safely,” the sheriff’s office said Monday.
