In 2019, Gellar reflected on how filming the controversial film was and why it still holds a special place for her on ET.

“I mean, ‘Cruel’ is interesting because, for me, I’m looking for things that will have an impact and something different. And teen movies at that point were teen movies. We came out of the John Hughes era and moved into this frothy romantic comedy, and took material like ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ and gave it to teenagers and that material, it was the first of its kind,” he explains.

“It’s bold and edgy, and some people are against the film and don’t think it’s a good idea. I think we always knew we were doing something really great.”

Witherspoon also shared a photo carousel on Instagram to mark the film’s 25th anniversary. She shared the same promotional photo as Gellar, as well as two iconic moments for her from the film.

“The best!! My teenage years come back to life every time I watch it! I have the soundtrack on CD and we’ll listen to it in my white Jeep over and over again! You’re amazing in it too!” a fan wrote.

Another added, “Ahhh… my teenage years are right here! Love this movie!”

The actress and mother of two recently promoted and participated in Global Unplug Day on March 1. When talking about the initiative with The Blast earlier in the day, Sarah Michelle Gellar explained why it’s important to her to limit technology whenever possible.

“It’s something I talk about a lot and I feel very strongly that as the world becomes more digitally connected, we end up becoming more disconnected because we don’t have that human connection. It is a touch; it’s eye to eye. I look at some of these kids and they can barely make eye contact because they’re so used to like, device, device, device, device. And it’s important to me to make sure we still have it. And that’s the message.” he exclusively told The Blast.

“The message is not that technology is bad. Technology is amazing, but it’s about reexamining our relationship with it and whether we’re taking enough breaks. Are we filling our souls with time and outside relationships and why is there an increase in depression and loneliness now that people are connected, we need to look at that and realize that there is a difference between digital connection and human connection, and we need both.”

Unplugging is something Gellar feels is important for younger generations as well.

“I cannot expect my children to control themselves in anything. It’s the same way we tell them you can’t drink soda, you have to eat, you can’t eat dessert. It is up to us to teach them,” he explained.

“I make the most of the screen time option so they get whatever amount of time a day we see fit and then it’s off. And if they want more time, they have to come to us and it’s up to us to say, oh, you know what, you haven’t been out, go get your basketball and go shoot some hoops or go see what the neighbors are doing. Or it’s drizzling, we can’t go anywhere, there’s work to do, keep going, this has extra hours. But then I can also determine what they watch.”

After Global Unplug Day, Sarah Michelle Gellar took to Instagram to share what she does with her tech-free time.

“After taking a break from technology at @GlobalDayofUnplugging, I’m grateful for the uninterrupted time I spent with my friends and family. It can be so easy to get caught up in technology and social media, which takes away from embracing human connection,” she captioned her photo carousel.

“Sometimes we all need that reminder to be present. I am very grateful for the time I have. Thank you @UScellular for encouraging me to unplug!”
