Czech Republic mourns victims of worst mass shooting in its history

Candles and flowers decorated the steps of a Prague University and flags flew at half-staff Saturday as residents of the Czech Republic mourned the 14 victims of the country’s worst mass shooting, according to reports.

Archbishop Jan Graubner said a mass in Prague’s main cathedral and the country held a minute’s silence at midday, with people stopping in the streets during the snowstorm and in the middle of last-minute Christmas shopping.

On Thursday, a 24-year-old gunman went on a rampage at Charles University’s Faculty of Arts in the city center, killing 14 students and a professor before shooting himself as police surrounded him at the top of the school building.

More than 25 people were taken to hospital, 13 of them with serious injuries.

Mourners on Saturday continued to carry candles and flowers to a makeshift memorial outside the Faculty of Arts and university headquarters in the historic center of Prague.

Gunman David Kozak shot dead his father at his home outside Prague before heading to the university, where he was a student.

Kozak is also a suspect in the murder of a father and newborn baby in the town of Klanovice on Dec. 15, authorities said.
