Damar Hamlin has apologized after being dragged for a recent fashion choice.
The Buffalo Bills safety has worn white and blue letterman jackets with a yellow design and words that some observers, including Adrian Peterson, found offensive to their religion for Sunday night’s Super Bowl.
The retaliation prompted Hamlin to apologize on his social media page, promising to do better. Afterwards, his apology drew praise from fans for being the bigger person, especially after he was given a second chance at life earlier this month.
Damar Hamlin Apologizes For Wearing Offensive Clothing To The Super Bowl
Hamlin’s jacket — created by Takashi Murakami and called “Travis Jesus” — features a presentation of the cross on the back etched in yellow. Upon seeing it, Petersen, a devout Christian, took to Twitter to share his dismay at the Bills players’ clothing choices. Without further ado, the free agent tweeted:
“You should thank God son! This is Blasphemy!! We all fail but cmon man! I don’t think this is rude!! #grateful #grateful”
Hours after several people asked him to chat with Hamlin, Peterson released an Instagram post suggesting that things had changed. The professional football running back’s caption reads in part:
“So I talked to [Damar], and we were able to discuss our thoughts as men. I want to be clear, I’m the last person to judge anyone, and that’s not my intention.”
She admitted that while she had to deal with her disappointment in the dress, she understood that “everyone makes mistakes and sometimes fails,” so it wasn’t her plan “to judge, just to share my opinion.”
Peterson later sent a direct message to Hamlin, emphasizing the “respect and love” he has for the 24-year-old and wishing him “nothing but the best, but I can’t be happy with the jacket.”
“I feel like a lot of people, young and old, look up to you, and with power and influence comes great responsibility. I’m sorry for offending you,” the caption finished.
After talking to my parents, I understand how my coat can offend some people. I never intended to hurt or disrespect anyone, coats are abstract art to me. It says Immortal that I am most grateful to my Savior! (1/2)

Now, days later, Hamlin has addressed the issue publicly, stating how discussions with his parents, Nina and Mario, helped him realize his mistake. “After talking to my parents, I understand how my coat can offend some people. I never intended to hurt or disrespect anyone, coats are abstract art to me. It says Immortal that I am most grateful to my Savior! (1/2),” he said tweeted.
The footballer added that his “faith and relationship with God” are not attached to “symbolic images.” Even so, he is willing to “learn from this and continue to walk in Love” as he “ALWAYS”.
“Stand tall you’ve shown the world your loyalty … stay focused on your recovery ??,” replied model Larsen Thompson. One fan added, “I love that you’re not ashamed of your beliefs. You are still here for a reason. There is no mistake in that.”
A third person admitted that while Hamlin didn’t have to apologize to anyone, the player’s “willingness to explain the situation” from his “side of the equation” shows how much he cares about others. The supporter concluded by asking the six-foot-tall celebrity to “Keep up the good fight!!!”

Over the weekend, the NFL honored Hamlin and his medical team ahead of the Super Bowl playoffs. The event began with Bills legend Jim Kelly and actress Sheryl Lee Ralph introducing the Buffalo Bills medical staff and Cincinnati Bengals staff and the University of Cincinnati Health Center on stage.
Both teams have managed to maintain security while at their respective facilities, according to The Blast. As the crowd cheered for them earlier, the applause grew louder when Ralph asked Hamlin to join the band on stage.
During her acceptance speech, she expressed gratitude to “God for being here” before expressing her admiration that people can be encouraged by her experience to pray, spread love, and “keep fighting no matter what.”
You’ll recall that Hamlin went into cardiac arrest during the Monday Night Football game, prompting trained officials to give him CPR before he was rushed to the hospital. He was discharged after nine days after being admitted to the two hospitals mentioned above.
He continues to update his fans about his recovery process through his social media accounts.
