“Dancing With the Stars” returns for its 32nd season, with Julianne Hough tapped to take Tyra Banks’ place as co-host. Hough will join “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” cast member Alfonso Ribero, who will return as co-host. Hough’s brother, Derek Hough, will return to the judges’ table alongside Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli.
However, the show faced significant backlash to begin production amid an ongoing strike by the Writers Guild of America (WGA).
Cheryl Burke Says ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Shouldn’t Be Aired During Strike

Former “Dancing With the Stars” pro dancer Cheryl Burke talks about the show going into production amid the WAG strike.
“Well, after the Drew Barrymore thing, I had mixed feelings,” he admitted to Variety, referring to the Drew Barrymore show facing backlash for initially planning to return without a writer; the show later decided to delay its return until after the strike.
“Even in a pandemic, people can say, ‘Why are you doing this?’ This is a sensitive subject when you’re talking about the entertainment industry,” continued Burke. “For a change, we need to come together, empty, because if one show just decides to figure out the show itself, it’s not going to make a big difference. It won’t change the way these other people – the opposing team – think. We must unite because that is the only way to make any significant change. Even the cast of “Friends,” when they asked for more money, they all stuck together.”
He added, “The problem is if we don’t do it, then we’re setting a precedent, and I don’t think it’s going to be good for the show, honestly, in the long run. I understand what they’re thinking, and I do. It’s business, but there is no business without another business.”
When explaining whether he thinks ABC’s reality competition show should go into production, he said, “I think they should stick with it. We need to stand as one. We need to truly unite, not just say we are united.”
Others Speak Out Against ‘DWTS’

Former WGA board member David Slack tweeted, “Dancing with the Stars is a WGA protected show. The writers are on strike, and they can’t do a show without writing scabies,” before going on to call out Alfonso Riberio, Julianne Hough, Jason Mraz, and Allison Hannigan.
And WGA member Bill Wolkoff write, “I’m glad this news is finally known. Live tapings of DWTS are on CBS TV City. We’re going to have a BIG week on our picket lot hitting the WGA shows that have decided to come back. This extends the strike! Spread the word that #DWTSisWGA.”
He too tweeted a photo of himself outside the studio area with the caption, “Day 141. I’ve been here since 6am watching the studio where Dancing With The Stars is produced. We will be ready to picket if they are on the air. It’s a WGA show. Hopefully, they will take a cue from Drew, JHud, the Talk and Bill and respect our picket line. #WGAStrong #DWTSisWGA”.
