New York University student leaders who send pro-Hamas messages have doubled down on incendiary rhetoric – despite facing ouster as president of the school’s Student Bar Association and losing a lucrative job offer.
Ryna Workman, who identifies as non-binary and uses it and they pronouns, said they had had a “terrible” week since writing a column in the school newsletter accusing Israel of holding “full responsibility” for the terrorist attacks that claimed at least 1,400 lives .
Despite being strongly rejected, Workman told The Intercept that they will “continue to speak up and show up.”
“What drives me is the resilience of the Palestinian people right now,” Workman told the media in their first media interview since the scandal.

In a statement Monday, Workman described the blowback to their newsletter as a diversion from what really matters.

“No matter how bad my week is, attention to a student’s email to their fellow law students is misplaced and a dangerous distraction,” Workman said, citing Israel’s 24-hour evacuation order to residents of northern Gaza, and its move to cut off food , water and electricity.
Last week, members of the Student Bar Association issued a statement saying they did not “write, approve or see this message” before it was published, adding that Workman did not speak for them.
The SBA board moved to remove Workman as president, a process that required several hearings, according to the statement, which alleges students were tortured, harassed and threatened with death after the broadcast was made.

Workman’s newsletter also landed them cushy jobs at Chicago firm Winston & Strawn, which rescinded its offer amid growing outrage.
The law school also released a statement that sought to clarify “a few things clearly on behalf of the NYU Law Board of Trustees and our Law School as a whole.”
“NYU Law strongly condemns the recent terrorist acts and atrocities committed by Hamas in Israel. The killing and kidnapping of civilians, and the use of sexual violence and the separation and torture of children, are all heinous and cruel,” the statement said.
“We want to say, loud and clear, to our community: Any statement that does not acknowledge this atrocity does not reflect the values of NYU Law,” he added.
In their interview with The Intercept, Workman said: “I am concerned that this backlash against me and others who have spoken out will also have the horrific effect of allowing this disproportionate and dangerous media narrative to continue where violence against Palestinian civilians is perpetuated. normalized.”
