The show’s 32nd season will begin as scheduled, featuring its full celebrity cast, which notably includes “Veep” star Matt Walsh. The actor, who is two Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists [SAG-AFTRA] and WGA member, temporarily suspended his participation in the show last Thursday.

As the WGA backlash intensified over the past few days, ABC formulated a strategy to delay the premiere of “DWTS.” As such, celebrity cast members find themselves under increased pressure and growing anxiety about their participation.

The celebrity concern stemmed from WGA members picketing the show’s rehearsals in an attempt to delay it or convince celebrities to withdraw. however, Diversity has now learned that the hit dance competition series will reopen the ballroom with Walsh behind it.

Speaking to the news outlet about the latest development, a representative of the “Bad Santa” cast stated, “With the hopeful resolution and vote with the WGA, ‘Dancing with the Stars’ is no longer an exciting show so all cast members will be able to return. This includes members of the WGA Matt Walsh.”

For many years the series, although a reality show, was covered by the WGA because it employed at least one WGA writer. If the show continues without these writers before the WGA reaches an agreement, sources have stated that the writers will be rehired once the strike ends.

It should be noted that although the WGA has reached a tentative agreement to end their strike, SAG-AFTRA is still on strike. However, SAG-AFTRA has expressed support for the show’s cast as a spokeswoman confirmed that their union members participating in the show did not violate union rules and fulfilled their contractual obligations by going to work.

For Walsh, EW observed that the “Christmas with the Kranks” star took to her Instagram Story to release a statement about her temporary withdrawal from the show just last week. According to the outlet, he had written:

“I took a break from Dancing With the Stars until a deal was made with WGAz excited to be on the show and did so under the impression that it wasn’t a WGA show and was under a different deal. This morning when I was informed by my union, the WGA, that it was considered a breach of contract, I walked out of my training. I have and will always stand with my union members WGA, SAG and [the Directors Guild of America].”

As the WGA strike approaches its 150th day, the union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers [AMPTP] reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract, effectively halting the ongoing writers’ strike. The encouraging update was shared by the WGA’s negotiating committee, led by co-chairs David A. Goodman and Chris Keyser, via email.

This announcement follows extensive meetings where they carefully discussed various aspects of the contract, including specific language regarding the use of generative AI in content production. Per The Blast, excerpts of an email sent to WGA members read:

“DEAR MEMBERS, We have reached a tentative agreement on the new MBA 2023, which is an agreement in principle on all points of the agreement, subject to the drafting of final contract language. What we have won in this contract – especially, everything we have won since May 2nd – is because of the willingness of this membership to use its power, to show its unity, to walk side by side, to withstand the pain and uncertainty of the last 146 days.”

Although the details of the contract have not yet been finalized and therefore cannot be made public, it has been described as an “extraordinary” deal that is very favorable to the writer.

The negotiating committee via email expressed pride in the agreement, emphasizing that it includes substantial gains and protections for writers across various membership sectors. The final step is for staff to ensure that all agreed terms are properly encoded in the language of the contract.
