“Love Is Blind” season 2 contestant Danielle Ruhl opened up about some of the bad treatment she claims she received from the Netflix show’s producers.
Danielle was married to Nick Thompson on the show but later filed for divorce and the two separated; however, Danielle now says she shouldn’t have gone on the show to begin with.

Business Insider interviewed several past contestants, including Danielle, who claimed that she was concerned about her mental health and didn’t think she would be able to continue filming. “I kept telling them, ‘I don’t believe in myself,'” he said. “‘I have tried to kill myself before. I have suicidal thoughts. I don’t think I can go on with this.’”
In two follow-up videos posted to Instagram, Danielle spoke candidly about her experience and that there would be a $50k fine if she left the show.
Danielle Ruhl Claims $50K Fine For Leaving ‘Love Is Blind’ & Claims They Used Mental Health Screening Against Her
Capturing her post with the hashtags #loveisblind and #loveisblindNetflix, Danielle opened up about her story and said that she wished she had never agreed to take part in the reality show.
“Looking back, I shouldn’t have agreed to go on a reality show. I wish I was more educated and self-aware back then. I really think that because of the premise of the show, it’s going to be different,” he said. “I believe that psychologists who do a 30-minute examination are not going to pick out those they think are mentally unfit. I don’t think they’re going to use the information expressed in this screening of you during filming because I thought it was difficult.”
“I went into this knowing that there was a $50K fine associated with leaving the show and I should have taken this more seriously before signing the contract,” he admitted. “My mental health during this experience affected Nick as well. It’s really hard to navigate. Even after the shooting, it affected me, my husband and those who care about me. I will always admit it was a big mistake to take part and I’m still trying to rediscover myself and who I was before filming.”
Danielle Called Appearing On ‘Love Is Blind’ A ‘Big Mistake’
Danielle explained that she is sharing this information so that Kinetic, the company behind the show, will learn “to better serve the contestants and help the audience bless the contestants.” However, he later said, “Everyone’s experience is different, so I’m only speaking for myself. In my season, people’s experiences are very different based on the ethical level of their producers.”
Danielle previously voiced support for season 2 contestant Jeremy Hartwell after he filed a lawsuit against Netflix and the show’s producers, alleging that the producers “contributed to inhumane and altered working conditions for the cast” through “a combination of sleep deprivation, isolation, lack of food and excess alcohol are all either required, enabled or encouraged” by those in power.

In his lawsuit, Jeremy claims that the contestants “were routinely denied food on the Defendant’s production sets and in their hotel accommodations.” He also claimed that the sink in the lounge on set was actually not working, so they had to rely on production assistants to bring them bottled water – which they did, along with alcohol.
“They would run out of food,” Danielle claimed in a Business Insider report, adding, “I remember every time we would go to the kitchen, there would be like a hard-boiled egg and it would be like a fight to see who could actually get the stuff.”

It’s not the first time Danielle has spoken out about the mistreatment she claims she suffered on set, including “coughing up blood” and being denied medical treatment.
“There were 2 days they stopped giving Nick and I water and food in Mexico (We sneaked to the neighbors through the swimming pool to get it),” Danielle claimed. “Nick and I begged to leave Mexico because of how bad everything was. I was so sick that I coughed up blood but couldn’t see a doctor.”
“Everyone made me believe that I should hate myself, and I didn’t, until they carved it into my brain,” she added. “So what you see is a lot of people being tortured to fit a preconceived narrative.”

In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Kinetic Content responded to Business Insider’s report, saying, “The well-being of our participants is extremely important to Kinetic.” The company added, “We have strict protocols to take care of everyone before, during and after filming.”
Kinetic also claims that Hartwell’s claims have “absolutely no merit” and vows to “vigorously defend his claims.”
