Daughter of woman found in gator’s jaws relives moment she learned about gruesome death

The daughter of a homeless Florida woman whose body was found in the jaws of a nearly 14-foot-long alligator says she prayed at first it wasn’t her — only for police to later show up on her doorstep to confirm her worst fears.

Sabrina Peckham’s daughter, Breauna Dorris, said she feared the worst when she learned the horrific attack happened about 50 feet from where her mother was staying in Largo on Friday.

“I found out that he was 50 feet from where it happened, I was praying, ‘I hope it’s not him, I hope it’s not him,'” his daughter Breauna Dorris, 23, told WFTS.

“Late that evening, law enforcement came to my door and pretty much told me it was him and he was gone,” he said.

“Sometimes it’s like you don’t remember at all that he’s not with us, and then I think he’s going to walk through the door at any moment, and then you remember and then it all comes back,” Dorris added.

The grieving woman said her mother struggled with homelessness.

“It didn’t matter that he was homeless, he was good to everyone,” Dorris told the outlet.

The community has rallied to raise money for funeral expenses.

“My mom wasn’t taken care of by many, but to know that in times like this where we need our little community that people come out to show their support, donate, pray, send kind words,” Dorris said.

“That’s all I can ask for in a time like this, honestly,” he added. “I’m sure my mom was just beaming knowing that even one person cared about her, let alone thousands.”

In an emotional Facebook post, Dorris expressed her love for her late mother.

“To my mom: I love you more than I can ever express, I miss you more than you know and I pray that you look down on me and your grandchildren,” he wrote over the weekend.

“Please protect us. I’m sorry this happened to you. I pray that you are at peace and that you are no longer struggling or hurting,” Dorris added.

The cause of death has not been determined pending an autopsy. It’s unclear if the gator killed Peckham or if he was already dead when it grabbed his body.

The mother and grandmother were previously arrested on July 14 for trespassing on county wetlands about a half-mile from where she was found dead, court records show. He pleaded no contest to the charge and was released from prison on September 8.
