Chappelle’s latest Netflix special is sure to get mixed reactions from viewers, as the comedian opens the show with a joke aimed at the LGBTQ+ community.
“The Dreamer” premiered on the streaming platform on December 31. The show mostly centers around Chappelle’s formative years in show business and how he rose to fame. However, the comedian used the first twelve minutes of the set to attack transgender individuals.
follow Diversity, Chappelle began the show by sharing his encounter with actor Jim Carrey on the set of the 1999 film “Man on the Moon.” Carrey famously embodied the role of comedian Andy Kaufman in the film with method acting.
Chappelle later stated that he was “really upset” interacting with Carrey while he was pretending to be Kaufman, claiming that that’s “how trans people make [him] feel it.”

Following his brief recollection of his encounter with Carrey, the comedian then spoke about the uproar over his anti-trans joke.
He said, “If you all came here to this show tonight thinking I’m going to make fun of that person again, you’ve come to the wrong show. I am no longer—— with those people. It’s not worth the trouble. I didn’t say s— about them. Maybe three or four times tonight, but that’s it. I’m tired of talking about them. And you want to know why I’m tired of talking about them? Because these people act like I need them to be funny.
“Well, that’s ridiculous. I don’t need you. I got a new angle coming up. You will never see this coming. I don’t do trans jokes anymore,” Chappelle added.
Later, he declared that he would switch to making jokes about “disabled” individuals because “they’re not as organized as gays. And [he loves] punch down.”

Shortly after, Chappelle resurrected trans people, claiming that he had tried to fix his relationship with them.
“Honestly, I’ve been trying to repair my relationship with the transgender community because I don’t want them to think I don’t like them. You know how I fixed it? I write a play. I have done. Because I know that gays like to play,” said Chappelle, per Diversity.
He continued, “It was a very sad game, but it was moving. It’s about a black transgender woman whose pronoun is, sadly, n—-. Really tearful. At the end of the play, he dies of loneliness because white liberals don’t know how to talk to him. Sad.”
In another segment, she joked that if she ever went to prison, she hoped it would be in California and that once she was sentenced, she would tell the judge to send her to a women’s prison because she suddenly identified as a woman.
Chappelle joked, “‘Before you sentence me, I want the court to know that I identify as a woman. Send me to the women’s prison.’ Once I get in there, you know what I’m going to do. ‘Give me your fruit cocktail, b—-, before I knock your mother—— teeth out. I’m a girl, just like you, b—-. Come here and suck this girl’s d— I got it. Don’t make me explain myself. I’m a girl.’”

Still in his signature comedy, Chappelle recalled being attacked at the Hollywood Bowl in 2022 and how he tried to defuse the intense moment by joking that his attacker was trans.
According to him, his audience did not take the joke well, as they allegedly mocked him by saying, “’Boo. It’s LA, we love trans people.’”
Chappelle previously came under fire for anti-trans jokes in his comedy special, “The Closer.” In 2021, there were calls for Netflix to cut ties with the comedian and not air his shows on their platform, but the company stood by Chappelle, stating that his jokes did not “cross the line of hate.”
In a memo, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos defended their position, despite threats from employees to quit the company,
He said at the time, “Some of you have also asked where we draw the line on hate. We don’t allow titles on Netflix that are designed to incite hatred or violence, and we don’t believe ‘The Closer’ crosses that line.”
