Madonna has paid tribute to Seymour Stein — the music executive responsible for launching her career after his death.
The co-founder of The Sire Records died at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday, April 2, after a long battle with cancer, at the age of 80. In a long and heartfelt tribute shared with her millions of followers, Madonna reflected on how the late entrepreneur changed her life by signing her to his label in 1982.

Although Stein’s deep knowledge and appreciation of music made him an astute talent judge in the ’70s, signing record deals with Talking Heads, the Pretenders, and the Ramones, his fortunes didn’t change until the ’80s. That was the year he heard Madonna’s demo tape, eventually signing her to her record label.
Since then, the two have maintained a cordial relationship, with the “4 Minutes” singer unable to hold back her emotions as she spoke about the passing of her longtime friend and first supporter. In a tribute shared with a series of touching images of the end of music and the singer-songwriter, he wrote:
“Seymour Stein has left us! I need to catch my breath. He is one of the most influential men in my life. He changed and shaped my world.”

The “Like a Prayer” artist recounted how she met Stein, explaining that the talent scout had asked to meet her after DJ Mark Kamins played a demo of her song, “Everybody,” during a night out at Danceteria nightclub in New York.
He recalled that although the vice president of Warner Bros. Records was “in the hospital with a heart attack,” he still kept their appointment. In the words of the Queen of Pop:
“When I met him he was lying in a hospital bed wearing boxer shorts and a wife beater! He has a cannula in his nose and a saline drip in his arm. He grinned like a Cheshire Cat.”
The meeting went well, with the New Yorker asking the “Hung Up” singer if she was “related to the Virgin Mary.” The 64-year-old added that the “Siren Song: My Life in Music” author signed him to Sire Records the same day after he played his song “several times.”
“This moment changed the course of my life forever. And was the beginning of my journey as a music artist. Not only did Seymour hear me, but he saw me and my potential! For this, I will always be grateful! I’m crying writing this,” continued the seven-time Grammy Award winner.
He went on to point out that Stein’s circle recognized his “passion for music and impeccable taste,” concluding, “Dear Seymour, you will never be forgotten!! Thank you! Thank you thank you! Shining!!!”
Madonna’s tribute touched many hearts, with nearly 5k people commenting on the post. The netizen thanked the MTV Video Music Award winner for sharing “this amazing story of yours.”

The Blast stated that the cause of death of Madonna’s brother, Anthony Ciccone, was released a month after her death. According to the death certificate, the “Papa Don’t Preach” singer’s brother’s series of health problems, including oropharyngeal cancer, led to his death.
Although cancer, most likely caused by continued tobacco use, was listed as a contributor, his death was caused by throat cancer and respiratory failure. Ciccone died in a Michigan nursing facility in February 2022 at the age of 66.
