Hollywood star David Harbour, best known for his role as police chief Jim Hopper in “Stranger Things,” recently revealed that he suffered a panic attack while filming the first season of the series. The actress is among a very small faction of people in Hollywood to achieve mainstream popularity at an older age.
Harbor was able to gather most of his popularity because “Stranger Things” became popular after its release in 2016. In addition to this series, the actor has starred in films such as “Hellboy,” “Violent Night,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “The Equalizer” and more.
During a recent interview, the actor revealed that while he was impressed with the script, he didn’t initially expect the Netflix sci-fi film to be a hit. He also recalled having a panic attack during filming because he thought the failure of the series would be “embarrassing.”

While talking to Yahoo! Entertainment, Harbor recalls his time filming “Stranger Things” and how he had panic attacks on set. He said that he found the character interesting and thought the script was amazing; however, he was not convinced that the show would actually have any kind of success.
Harbor explained that after being cast for the role, the crew, which he described as “very small,” moved to Atlanta to shoot. They seem to have less money and have to work harder to make up for it, and as a result, he is increasingly worried about the outcome of the series.
The actor recalls, “In the middle of this process, I had nights where I would just be in a panic attack thinking, ‘This is terrible.’ Like, ‘This is a terrible show. I’m terrible in it. And it’s just going to be embarrassing.'”
David Harbor Says Netflix Doesn’t Advertise ‘Stranger Things’

Harbor revealed that he felt even worse when he discovered that Netflix allegedly did not advertise the series even with its release date approaching. “[Even when it was about to be] released, Netflix doesn’t seem to be advertising it,” the actor said.
He continued, “A friend at another show told me there were no commercials around New York City. And I was like, ‘Why aren’t there commercials?’ And he was like, ‘Netflix just buried the show. They hate it.’ And I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m a big hit on Netflix, and they hate it.'”
The “Brokeback Mountain” star said at first he thought the film would add to his growing list of failures. This is why, when “Stranger Things” grew into the most-watched series on Netflix, “it was more satisfying.” He revealed that he never thought people would love the show as much as they do now.
He Didn’t Know ‘Stranger Things’ Would Explode

During the interview, the “Brokeback Mountain” actor admitted that he didn’t expect “Stranger Things” to become as popular as it did. After getting the script for “Stranger Things” and reading it, Harbor revealed that he thought it was “great” but was confident “nobody’s going to watch it.”
He said, “So that’s what I thought: I think this is probably the best pilot script I’ve ever read. And I definitely liked that character more than any other character I think I’ve ever read.”
Harbor said that when he read about the role, he felt that Jim Hopper was the man he wanted to play and the type of person he admired. “But I really thought, ‘I’m sure nobody’s going to be interested in this, but we’re going to make it.’ It’s going to be a very niche, small audience of die-hard fans.”
David Harbor Is Proud Of His Young Costars

When asked how he feels about younger stars and their success in becoming famous, Harbor said he finds it both “scary and thrilling” for them as he watches them grow up. He explained that while he is very happy that the world is accepting them for their obvious talent, he is worried about the kind of pressure they face.
“I have a protective quality because I know them as children, and I know them as little actors on set. And then to see the world just fall in love with them to the point where they just want to eat them is scary,” said the “Hellboy” actor.
Harbor continued, “So I’m worried for them. And also, I’m really happy that they’re being embraced for their talent. But it’s a scary thing to see a young soul have to deal with that kind of crap that, like, even as a 40-year-old man years, it’s hard to deal with. When I feel like protecting them, it’s very complicated.”
