An elderly DC man stabbed his wife to death because she wouldn’t eat the pancakes he made for her, officials said Friday.
Steven Schwartz, 85, allegedly plunged the carving knife into the back of 81-year-old Sharron Hilda Schwartz at their home in northwest DC Sunday after she tried to push him the sugary breakfast item to help her gain weight, according to a federal criminal complaint.
“I killed him, my God. I don’t remember it being a mad fight!” Schwartz allegedly said while sitting in the back of a police cruiser.
The accused killer told detectives he had lost up to 50 pounds during a recent hospital stay due to physical and psychiatric disorders and that Sharron was trying to regain the weight.
Schwartz described his wife as “a bit of a taskmaster,” but admitted he did it because he “loved her so much that [she] wants him well and he wants his partner and protector back,” the document states.
Sharron reportedly pushed him pancakes after finding out he wasn’t planning on having breakfast because he had eaten a quarter of a Krispy Kreme donut the day before.
Schwartz relented, but quickly changed his mind — sparking a deadly altercation.

“The next thing [he] heard a plate hit the wall,” the affidavit said.
That’s when Schwartz allegedly took a carving knife from a butcher’s block and buried it in Sharron’s back.
Neighbors heard screams from inside the house and called the couple’s son, who had to push his mother’s body out of the way to get inside the house when he arrived just minutes later.
“I stabbed him and then myself,” Schwartz reportedly told his son before handing over the knife.
When police arrived, Schwartz had grabbed another knife and was holding it to his stomach, the documents allege.
After stabbing himself, officers deployed a Taser and disarmed Schwartz before placing him under arrest.
Both he and his wife were rushed to the hospital, where Sharron was pronounced dead.

A post-mortem report later found that he had been stabbed once in the back and that the knife had pierced his heart.
“I wanted to die so bad … I couldn’t stand food and he made me eat and we fought. He screamed and he threw it at me. I have two diagnoses, depression and eating disorders. What happened, what really happened,” Schwartz allegedly told police.
“He doesn’t deserve this, I deserve it, he doesn’t deserve it.”
Schwartz was released from the hospital and arrested Thursday for second-degree murder while armed, federal prosecutors announced.
“The defendant did not want to eat the pancakes he made and stabbed him in the back,” the US Attorney for the District of Columbia said in a statement.
He pleaded not guilty to the crime, although his confession was alleged moments after the crime.
Schwartz was remanded without bond.
